McCorkle Fawora Projact To Bo Finaaced By City and U. S. «}ontlBnea from first poBO> "It may be several years before the exigencies of war will permit of such a building being constracted," said Mayor McCorkle. “However I feel that now is the time to plan for it I have been approached by vari ous people of prominence as to what Camden planned to do in the matter of providing a memorial for her sol dier dead. I can think of nothing that would be more apprepriate than a community building promoted by the City and the County. It will be a place where people may gather to dis cuss matters pertaining to the prog ress and welfare of the community. It will offer an opportunity for Cam den te invite outstanding lycenm groups here, literary, musical and scientific and permit our people to em Joy the- advantages ottered by auoh cultural affaim. "Frankly I think this la something that should receive the moat profound study on the part of all of us. Since our service center. In which wa have some 12,000 in furnishings invested, may soon pass out of existence if the option held by the group sponsoring the freeser locker project Is exercised, we must do something to provide a place where people of the community may gather, ’The success of our serv ice center which has brought bappL ness and light to tens of thousands of. soldiers who have enjoyed Its hospi tality has enlightened many of us as to the possibilities to bo anticipated through the medium of a community center." Mayor McCorkle went on to state that be was going to ask the City Council to give him permission to con tinue the operatk>n .of the service cen ter through the months of August end September, as it will be October be fore the freeser plant conatroctlon will get under way It the option is exercised. For that reason the Mayor atates that be would like the aervice men at IV>rt Jackson, Shaw Field %pd other points who have been coming to Camden bY the hundreds on week ends for years to know that the serr. ioe center will be available to them on week-ends during the months of August and September. If. at the end of September, there la need for the continued care and en tertainment of the fighting men in training at the nearby camps and posts, the Mayor declared that he would take stepe to have the center program carried* out.
