Garden Month
This Is our best Victory garden
month. All firm people are asked to
produce more food than ever before.
Every city family is also called upon
to produce all possible. Since fresh
green vegetables are an essential part
of our daily diets and supply us with
vitamins
and since the normal commercial sup
ply may be short, it becomes a public
duty as well as a necessity for all
who can to grow as much of .the
vegetables needed fbr the family as
possible.
Plant those kinds of vegetables that
are liked by the family in quantities
that can either be eaten fresh or con
served for the comlhtf winter. In
order that a continuous supply of
vegetables may he had throughout
the summer, repeated planting of cer
tain vegetables may be made every
few wt'eks. It is time now to make
plantings of the following: Snap
beann, lima beans, squash, cucumbers,
okra and corn. Snap beans, I'ma
beans, tomatoes, corn and feas lend
themfelves well to successive plant
ings.
This is the time to transplant to
matoes, sweet potatoes, egg plant and
pepper. Before pulling these plants
from the hot bed, water the bed
thoroughly and a lot of the soil will
cling to the roots of the plants.

As They Walk Through The Valley!
• •
MUST be a strange world out there—where there are no thousands cheering ...
Where radios^ ari^'t blaring . .. Where there is neither race riot nor rucHusnor
confusion of tongues. Out there where they walk the longest valley of its kind
ever known to man, with our future in their gun. Or walks it in the skies with
our freedom in their eyes. We stay-at-homes can be with them in unity or leave
them to their luck. But... . ^
. . Can We at Home Afford to Sit IDLY BY ? ..
'..1 *
THOSE boys who are sacrificing their lives on foreign fields, are expecting us,
who are fortunate enough to he at home, to protect those things that are dear to
them. We can do that only by preparing ourselves for any emergencies that might
arise here at home. The State Guards offer that training. You are furnished a
neat uniform, as prescribed by the South Carolina Adjutant General, which you
. will wear at _all drills ^ ,. . Competent instructors teach you the Elements and
principles of military regulatfons, as are prescribed by the‘U. S. Army. Even if
you are a potential soldier, the tra:ining received in this Unit will equip you with
the knowledge that is the backbone of the basic training you will receive after in
duction into the armed forces. .
