His Commander
C. K. McNeely, 17, an aviation ma
chinist’s mate, 3rd. class, of Camden,
now stationed at the Naval Air Sta
tion, BeauforL recently received ^e
commanding officer’s commendation
for d<^i» performed as a member of
the Crash crew.
McNeely, with two other members
of his crew, K T. HttaII
E. Peebles, showed speed and alert
ness to duty when they rusbed to an
airplane crash and put out the fire
which had started in time to save the
plane, which was loaded with live am
munition. The crash happened late in
the afternoon when the alternate
crash crew had gone to evening
‘‘chow,” leaving only the three men
to go to the reecue. There were no
casualties in the crash.
These three men have worked to
gether as a crash crew for five
months. McNeely, before-enlisting in
the Navy six months ago, was n me
chanic and on a crash crew
civilian at an Army Air base. Aher
his three weeks boot training at
Jacksonville, Fla., he' was transferred
to the Beaufort Naval Air station.
