seemed fantastic when made at the Regional Director,
beginning of 1943, that it would turn
out a ship a day of major fighting
atrd cargo craft.
The remarkable program carried
otrt by Bethlehem included a 38.00fr-
ton battleship, 27,000-ton aircraft car.
Tiers, 14.700-ton aircraft carriers. 13,-
000-ton heavy cruisers, 10,000-ton light
cruisers, 6.000-ton light cruisers, 2.100-
ton destroyt’rs. 1,620-ton destroyers,
destroyer escorts, tank landing craft,
infantry landing craft, and many types
of cargo ships including a large num
ber Qf Liberty ships and Victory ships.
The .value of the year’s work was
equivalent to over 1,000 Liberty ships
and, in terms of man-hours, the com
pany estimates the 1943 program was
equivalent to the construction of 22
battleships. Approximately 70 per
cent of the ships built were fighting
craft and 30 per cent cargo vessels.
In addition to the amazing produc
tion record of new ships, Bethlehem
yards also repaired, converted and
serviced over 7,000 vessels, thus play
ing a major role In keeping onr fljght-
ing fleets In trim.
Approximately 300,000 men and w6-
men were employed by Bethlehem,In
Its shipyards, steel mills and other
divisions to accomplish this program.
But because the company has set Its
sights still higher for 1944 it wlll^ bo
necessary to add still more to its
present army of employees.

the same way?
A. Yes. At present each consumer
gets 16 meat points a week, or 32
points every two weeks.. Under the
token system, three red stamps, worth
10 points each, will give him 30 points
to use during the first two weeks of
token rationing. As in processed
foods rationing, the small difference
of two points will be adjusted in the
point value of items rationed under
the meat order.
Q. What will consumers do with
their tokens?
A. They ■will use them very much
as they now use pennies. A consumer
who buys items worth 23 blue points,
for example, will give his retailer two
blue stamps (a total of 20 points) and
three blue tokens, (each worth one
point). If be has no tokens, he v'Ul
give his retailer three blue stamps
(30 points) and receive seven blue
tokens in change.
Q. Is there any difference between
the meat and the processed foods
tokens?
A. The only difference in the two
kinds of tokens is in their color. The
colors match the stamps with which
they will be used; blue stamps and
blue tokens for processed foods; red
stamps and red tokens for meats and
fats.
Q. . Will I turn in my ration tokens
at the end of each ration period?
A. No. Tokens have no expiration
date.
