C. A CHALLENGE . ^p..i i mm > ' For years i>a*t the fact that the Hoy Scout movement has not made greater progress In Camden has been Invariably blamed upon the lack of Scout leaders. Hecently moat of the Scout leadera in Camden have been called luto Ihu armed forces and ao the movement waa faced with an even more critical shortage of leaders. To remedy this situation for the duration the Idea waa conceived of requesting some of the instructors at the Southern Aviation school to volunteer as Hoy Scout leaders. At the request of the District Hoy Scout organization Henry Savage. Jr., at-i tended a meeting of the instructors at the Southern Aviation school Tuesday evening and briefly luid the problem before them and askod for volunteers Immediately fifteen iustructora signified their desire to help iu ' this work. As an aside, wo want to congratulate tho personnel of the Southern Aviation school on this fine showing of community spirit. These instructors by their act have thrown out to this community a challenge?a challenge wo must meet. It Is a challenge to every church bud organisation interested In the Hoy Scout movement. It Is h challenge to the boys of this community who have on repeated polls indicated their desire to be affiliated with the Hoy Scout movement here. Fvery church and every organization sponsoring the Boy Scout movement should immediately activate their troup committees and arrange for meetings of prospective Scouts. If this is done we now have within our grasp tho opportunity to go places in Scouting to a far greater extent than this community has ever enjoyed before. Peanut Treatment Cheap and Effective * > Blacksville, March.?Poor stands of peanuts, which are often responsible for low yields, are frequently caused by decay of the seed in the soil prior to the emergence of the young plant, I)r. C. J. Nusbaum, plant pathologist of the Edisto Experiment Station, said here today. Jf weather and soil conditions at planting time favor seed decay, losses may be very great. Experiments conducted at the Edisto Experiment Station have shown that this trouble may be reduced at a cost of only a few cents per acre by tho use of chemical seed disinfectants. Preliminary trials showed that two per cent Ceresan, the same material which is widely used for treating cotton seed, increased the stand by as much as 40 per cent over untreated seed. In later trials in the field with unshelled, hand-shelled, and machineshelled Spanish peanuts, 2 per cent Ceresan increased the stand 8, 8 5. and 21 per cent, respectively. Further| more, the yields of both nqts and hay were proportionately greater from seed treated with two per cent Ceresan. Spergon, one of the newer seed treatment chemicals, also gave good performance but this material may not be available to growers in South Carolina^ this year. Other new materials, which have shown promise, are being tested. The results hero reported are generally in agreement with those that have been obtained in other peanutgrowing areas by other investigators. Various reports show stand Increases usually averaging 8 to 25 per cent. In most tests are treatment has been shown to be more profitable on maohine-shelled seed than on unshelled or hand-shelled seed. This may be because in the process of shelling by machine the seed coats are injured, thereby allowing an entrance for seeddecaying organisms. If t-wo per cent Ceresan is used with unshelled so<h1. five ounces per 100 pounds of seed is recommended. If hand-shelled or machine-shelled seed are used, the dosage should bo reduced to 2 ounces per 100 pounds of shelled seed. The seed, together with the proper amount of chemical disinfectant. should 1x3 placed in a drum or other closed container and thor ??I oughly agitated to insure uniform cor.' erage of the seed.
