bishop of the Diocese of South Carolina,
was the officiating minister.
The .bride, who was given Nu mar*
rlage by her grandfather, Dr. Marlon
Singleton Kirk, of Magnolia Hall, Hagood,
descended a stairway to the
drawing room, where an Improvised
altar was arranged. She wore her
mother's wedding gown of ivory sattu
which had a lace oversklrt and train,
and also her veil of French Illusion
bound in lace. Her only ornament
was a white coral necklace which
was worn by her great-great-grandmother,
Epatha Kllerbe, more than
125 years ago. Miss.
Bert Wilson, of- Darlington,
attended her as niald of honor. Her
other attendants were Mrs. Dan
Wheeler, of Atlanta, Ga., matron of
honor, and Mrs. Whit Boykin II, of
Boykin, sister of the bridegroom, and
Miss Louise LeNoir, of Hagpod, as
bridesmaids. a
The honor attendants wore dresses
of ivory taffetA and the two maids
were gowned in palo green taffeta.
All carried bouquets of pink carnations.

Robin Zemp, Jr., of Camden, was
best man and the ushers were Ned
Heard, of Camden; Whit Boykin, II,
of Boykin; Jim Haynsworth, brother
of the bride, of Hagood; and Rufus
Kedfearo, of Camden.
The ceremony was held In a setting
of white carnations, gadioli and
umilax and the Illumination was furIntshed
by candles 1n seven-branched
candelabra and in candle brackets on
the' walls.
Mrs. John S. Frlerson, of Stateburg.
was pianist and soloists were
Clifton McKain, of Camden, vocalist,
who sang "O Perfect Love," and P.
A. Girard, of Sumter, violinist.
Immediately following the ceremony
a reception was held. The bridal
couple were assisted in receiving by
Mrs. Kirk Haynsworth, of Hagood,
mother of -the bride, Mrs. Henry G.
Garrison, of Camden, mother of the
bridegroom, Mrs. Hlckson, his grandmother.
and the bride's attendants.
.Mrs Haynsworth wore a blue silkcrepe
gown with, pink roses and Mrs.
Garrison a flowered silk, also with a
corsage of pink roses.
Mr. and Mrs. Perry Brown, aunt and
uncle of the bride who reside at Mill-,
vale, received gueBts in the library.
Mrs. Brown was gowned in rose and
black taffeta trimmed In black sequins
and her corsage was of gardenias.
Others who assisted lu receiving
and serving sandwiches, nuts, biscuits,
coffee, tea and puuch were Mrs.

present from Camden, Sumter, Columbia

Lieutenant and Mrs. Carrlson left
late in the afternoon for their wedding
trip, and Mrs. Carripon wore for
travellng a brown and beige checked
two-piece dress, a binge hut, brown
accessories, a brown fur coat and orchid
corsage.

Mrs. Carrlson, Jr., Is the daughter
of Mrs. Haynsworth, and J. Arthur
Haynsworth, of Augusta, Ga., formerly
of Sumtor. Her mother Is the
former Susan Singleton Kirk.
The bride Is the only granddaughter
of Dr. Kirk and the late Mrs.
Kirk, who was Mary Alden Porter
Ellerbe, and she also is the only
grandaughter of the late Mr. and!
Mrs. Juntos Lafayette Haynsworth, of I
Sumter.
She attended Coker college, .Hartsville,
where she was a member of
Sigma Tau Delta, national honorary
English fraternity, the Coker glee
club and had been numed beauty
queeu for 1942-1943.
Lieutenant Carrlson attended The
Citadel, at Charleston, before enter<>
lng the Navy. There he was a member
of the Yacht club, the Bucca-i
neers and the boxing team. He was
graduated front the Midshipman's
school of Columbia university in the
City of New York In February, 1941,
being commissioned ensign in toe
Naval Reserve. Since then he has
been on active duty with the Atlantic
and Pacific fleets, and is a survivor
of the destroyer Meredith, which
went dowit in the battle of the So'o-j
moits.
His mother is the former Phyllis H.
Hickson, of CheVaw.?Saturday's Sumter

Classes Start Tuesday
The women of Camden are asked
to Join a course of physical Instruction
to be given under the direction
of Sergeant Grover Hawkins, athletic
instructor at the Southern Aviation
School, at the school gymnaaium, on
East Laurens street. There will be
no cost to this course and It will
be a privilege the women of Camden
should take advantage of. It Is everyone's
duty to keep well and fit
during this time of war. It is hoped
a large claes will be on hand Tuesday
night, January 26.

Mrs. J. U. Richards, Jr.. was hostess
at a lovely bridge party Monday
evening at her home on North Fair
street. This lovely affair was given
I In honor of her aunt, Mrs. J. B. W.
Halle, of Rock Hill, who was visiting
her sister, Mrs. I. R. Hayes. Mrs. R.
E. Stevenson won high score. At the
conclusion of the games the hostess
served a delicious sweet course.
Circles Met in Wlmberly Hall
The Woman's Society of Christian
Service hold their January meeting
in Wlmberly Hall, at 4 p. in., January
19. There was a large representation
from the circles.
Mrs. R. K. Cliewning, vice president,
had change of the program.
She -presented Miss Alma Metcalf,
who told of how Albreehl Durer came
I to pafnt the picture, "Praying
Hands." Mrs. Stoue sang "Ivory Palaces,"
accompanied on the piano by
Mrs. James Candy.

presided over the business meeting
The Marietta Burns Circle served
light refreshments.
Lovely Party
One of the loveliest partiest of the
week was given last Wednesday evening
by Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Hoover
at their home on Mill street. The
rooms, where six tables were placed
for contract, were attractively arranged
with lovely flowers. High
score prizes were won by Mrs. Watson
Eaddy and William J. Lawrence,
III. Bingo prizes were won by Mrs.
John S. Dunbar. Jr., E. R. Partridge,
Jr., Mr. and Mrs. T. J. Reynolds, Jr.,
"and Mrs. Robert Ward. Following
the game the hostess placed a large
platter with sandwiches, cheese, biscuits
and fruit cake on each table
with soft drinks.
Had Birthday Party ,
Mrs. M. B. Williams gave a pretty
children's party last Monday afternoon
in honor of her daughter. Marietta,
who celebrated her fourth
birthday. The party was given at
the Williams home on Lyttleton
street and twenty-stx children were
Invited. The dining room was attractively
decorated in red, white apd
blue. In the center of the table was
the birthday cake, prettily decorated
with red hearts placed around it.
After playing the usual party games
the children were invited in^o the
dining room where the hostess, assisted
by Jean Lee and Virginia Collins,
served delightful ice cream and cookies.
The party was in the nature of
a circus and the favors were clowns.
Part of the new Alaska highway
surfacing is made of wood.

for Miss Mary Alden Ellerbe Haynsworth,
who was wed to Lieutenant
Henry G. Carriaon, Jr., January 14,
was the bridesmaid's luncheon given
by Mrs. Dan V. Wheeler Wednesday
at high noon at the Court Inn.
Guests were the bride, her mother,
Mrs. Susie Hay^/sworHi; Mrs. H. G.
Carrlson, mother of the groom; Mrs.
L. W. Boykin, 2nd.; Miss Louise Lenoir
and Miss Bert Wilson, bridesmaids.
Centering the beautifully appointed
table was a lovely flower arrangement
of white roses and white gladioli
The bride's place was marked
by a mLniature bride's bouquet?and
she was presentecf a wedding gift by
her hostess. A delicious luncheop

TO LEGION AUXILIARY MEET
Mrs. F. D. Goodale entertained
members of the American Legion
Auxiliary lust Friday afternoon at
her attractive home on Broad street.
Aftor the opening flag ceremonies,
the secretary reud the minutes of the
previous meeting.
Mrs. Wiley Sheorn, membership
chairman, reported that five new
members have been duly received,
and that the Camden unit will receive
national citation for reaching the
specified quota.
The president and members Join
the membership chairman in urging
all eligible ladies to apply for membership
in this organization that does
a tine work in Americanism.
Mrs. Hughey Tindal, chairman of
war activities, gave an interesting
talk on how the members can help
win this war. The Auxiliary voted
to name Wednesday as American Legion
Auxiliary day at the local Red
Cross chapter. Each member and
every Camden lady is asked to spend
part of each Wednesday working in
the surgical dressing department.
The president reported that the
Junior Auxiliary members wrapped
Christmas glftB and delivered them
to a deserving family of seven. The
Christmas box to this family Included
sweaters, socks, ties, overalls, stockings,
toys and groceries. The Juniors
are doing a very good work in their
department. J

tion chairman, asked the Auxiliary j
members to bring to the next/meeting
their locker covers for fhe Vet* j
erans' hospital in Columbia. Those
locker covers are to be 16x20 inches.
As a climax of the meeting, Mrs.
J. C. Ewing introduced Mrs. Samuel
Russell as guest speaker. Mrs., Russell
is in charge of the sewing department
of production in the American
Red Cross. She spoke on the
subject of "The Red Cross Kits that
are Given to Men Going Overseas"
Mrs. Russell is ^ fluent speaker, and
her subject was one of much interest
and importance.
Mrs.. Goodale served a delicious
salad course to twenty-four members
and one guest.

, A groutf of friends entertained with
a dinner party at Thomas' Tavern
last Saturday night in honor of Joe
Mills, who was leaving Wednesday
I for service in the army. After dinJ
ner all attended the mid-night show
at the Camden Theatre. Joe Mills has
been making his home in Camden
for the past year with his brother
and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Wilson
Mills, who live near the Springdale
Course. He has' made many
friends since moving to C&mdep.
