A Letter to Johnj'
Dear John
Tills letter should huvo a lot of j
interest lor certainly there has been
plenty taking place around the home
town the puHl week to slit up all
kind* of excitement.
I The recent order of the OI'A 1?
motorists to cut out driving their |
I cars for pleuaure or fun has made a (
big splash. In fact, the situation
(created by the order has been the
sole topic of conversation for days
and days. No matter whore you were,
(everybody was tulklng about the gas|
less or rather rldeless condition
j which faces the biggest majority of
| civilians.
j And 'from what the boss man in
Columbia tells me, the government
j is really going to be hard-boiled j
about the matter. You either knuckle
down and behave by living up to the
federal order or else you will do your
I traveling on your footsies for many
I months
I The theaters, restaurants, night
j clubs, bridge groups, cocktail parlies,
I weddings, and the like are going to
: " i
be given a haymaker. Just to show j
you how determined the OI'A is to
(force the citizens to behave and face
j the music, it might be mentioned j
that last Friday night state checkers]
(were in Camden taking a toll of cars
|parked in the theater area, night
I clnhs, and other places,
i The proposed plan of the Junior
League to have their midwinter ball
at the Kirkwood on January 22.
makes one wonder just how many of
the fair dames will walk to the ball
The League leaders have been very
good about announcing that there
will he no definite designation as to
dress?those who wish to come all!
dolled up may do so and those who i
prefer sport clothes, may dress that J
j way. j
U'e talked to one lady who is quite
lame >mj. caimot get down to the j
movie theater except in a ear. Sh ? j
has given up the idea of seeing any I
| more pictures for some time. In a
| case like this, it is really too bad.
| for this lady does not get much out
of life because of her crippled conIdition
and it does seem that she
should not he deprived of her only
enjoyment. Someone will suggest
that she take a taxi to and from !h 1
theater. Well, she isn't very well
to do and taxis cost money.
A business man we talked to said
that he was perfectly willing to give
up his occasional jaunt to the Sarsfleld.
cut out calling on friends for
an occasional game of cards, but he
certainly Intended to see that every
body else cooperated In the same
manner. And John, ho 1h ilKht. If
the restrictions inontlonod in the
press are to he Imposed, they should
be imposed on all alike.
Quite a number of civilians have
suggested that unless the police intend
to force compliance with the
stop and go signals tit Lyttleton and
DeKalb streets, they might Just as
well discontinue the signals. And if
anyone thinks these people do not
have the reason to complain let him
up .a little checking himself. Wo
did knd li Is not any exaggeration
tX state thut very Utile respect Is
partfcfttf -the signals at that corner.
AnoUlCT problem, and wo are happy
to say thai Dr. A W. Humphries has
taken this one under his wing, and
no doubt will solve It very soon, concerns
the dog nuisance. Dozens,
scores, in fact hundreds of canines
are running at large In Camden. For
some time many of the citizenry has
fumed and growled about the laxity
in curbing this evil. Now Dr. Humphries
has stepped into the ring and
Mr. dog owner may not he surprised
it' he gets a notice to either tie FidO
up. put him in a kennel, anyway to
keep him on his own premises, or
Fido may join ills ancestors in that
happy hunting ground where doggies
! go.
There have been feeble and sporadic
attempts to curl) the dog nuisance
year after year, but in each
instance, little has been accomplished
We have an idea that Dr. Humphries
is going plates in solving this
problem.
I
(ielting hack to the gas situation?
1 talked to one of the state OCA officials
over the telephone the other
day and when I asked hm to tell me
just what the motorist could not do
?ho said that It would he far easier
for him to elucidate on what they
could do. He then went on to explain
that "if it's fun. it's out." In
other words, one cannot drive anywhere
for pleasure. Then he added
that people could drive their cars to
the hospital, to a doctor, take their
children to school and also drive to
church. Which caused us to remark
to the OCA gentleman that we did
not feel it was just proper for the
OPA to regard going to church as
not being a pleasure.
In closing John. I just want to take
time to tell you what a witty shot
Donnip fired in the office last Friday.
I was speaking of the gas restrictions
and when 1 started to mention
the things a motorist could do. Don
chimed in and said, "I know Skipper,
I know. You can drive to the doctor,
then to the hospital, then to church
and then to the cemetery."
So long for this week, old chap,
