WEAVER BROTHERS AND ELVIRY STAR AGAIN IN NEW PICTURE "Shepherd of the Oznrks," the newcut entry In Republic pictures' series of comedies starring the ever popular Weaver Brothers and Klvlry, will he the next attraction at the Halglar Theatre, opening a twoday run on Monday. The Weavers are seen as the leading citizens of an isolated Ozark Mountain village, whose sleepy existence Is suddenly enlivened by the complications which ensue when bauxite. the ore from which aluminum is obtained, Is discovered in the area This discovery is made by the president of a big aluminum company, James J. Maloney, who wishes to buy out the villagers and obtain a monopoly on the ore. even though aluminum is badly needed In national defense work. The Weavers, on the other hand, favor dealing directly with the government, and win the villagers over to their way of thinking. Maloney then resortB to terroism, importing an assortment of thugs to Intimidate the townspeople into selling out to him. However, his own son, Jimmy, a lieutenant In the U. S. Army Air Corps, leads the tight against him, and enables the Weavers to carry out their plan. Marilyn Hare appears as Susanna, Abner and Klvlry Weaver's daughter, while Frank Albertson plays the part of Jimmy, the young lieutenant. Thurston Hall will be seen as James J. Maloney. Also ImjHjrtantly cast are Johnny Arthur, William Haade, Wade Crosby, and J. Arthur Young. President Greene Is Cousin W. G. Major I)r. Walter Klrkland Greene. Just elected as president of Wofford college at Spartanburg, Is a first cousin of W. J. Major of this city, bookkeeper at Burns and Barrett hardware company store. Dr. Greene and Mr. Major attended school together at Greenwood, South Carolina and were members of the same graduating class. Dr. Greene was instructor In English and dean of under graduate instruction before being elected to the presidency of Wofford college. He succeeds Dr. Henry Nelson Snyder, who has been president for the past 40 years. Mr. Major Is a great admirer of his cousin and believes he will make Wofford college an outstanding executive. Mr. Major has a son. W. G. Major. Jr.. who has Just finished his freshman year at Wofford and is employed this summer at the Southern Aviation school post here. Retired Farmer Dies James Elliott. 62. retired farmer, died at 8 o'clock Wednesday night. June 1. at the home of his daughter, Mrs Sam T. McCasklll, of the Adtloch section. Besides his daughter, a son. Tillman Elliott, of the Anlloch section, survives. Funeral services were conducted at 11 o'clock Friday morning from the Beaver Dam Baptist church. Richards of the Lancaster high school has returned from Gainesville, Florida, where he was sent by the United States .government for a period of ten flays instruction In war civilian defense work at the University of Florida. Ho will teach at Lancaster and probably at other places too. Mrs. Richards accompanied her husband on the trip. They stopped over on return for a short visit with his sister, at the Richards' home here. Mrs. R. Frank Eskridge, of Cheraw. is spending the summer with her parents. postmaster and Mr?. C. D. Cunningham at their home here while Sergeant Eskridge is attending officer's school at Camp Davis, N. C. Mr. and Mrs. J. B. McCoy and daughters. Mrs. Nettles Myers and Infant son. of Qassatt, and John Perry, of Camden spent Sunday with Mrs. McCoy's sister, Mrs. F. B. Floyd and brother. L. A. Perry. Lieutenant A. C. Cureton. Jr., who joined the United States Army sometime ago. and is now located at Desert Training Center, India, California, writes his mother that it is very hot, 118 degrees out there, but is told that is spring weather?Juat wait until August.
