DuBose, St., who is the Camden postmaster, heads a committee involving extended cooperation from the post office and the telegraph companies. Earl Wheeldr, of the Southern Aviation School, Clarkaon Rhame, First Lieutenant A. M. Wilcox,, First Lieutenant D. O. Harrington are members of the outdoor sports committee, Mrs. James Porter, chairman of the service clubs and social centers committee, Bob Kennedy chairman of the fair practices committee and Joe McKain, Frank H. Heath heads the publicity and information committee. Already the city is being signed with arrows to indicate location of recreational areas and historic places. There will be a central board bearing all the names of the points in question in the city square. At street Intersections nearest these points will S^^rrows with names of the respective places. j Taxi cabs will be allowed to charge but a minimum charge for transportation during the maneuvers period. The Chamber of Commerce will issue bulletins telling of entertainment and athletic events and giving data on church services, points of interest, listing of accommodations and other (acts of interest to the visitors. On the walls of the Camden Chamber of Commerce hang two flags? Hags of design unfamiliar to most of the visitors. Camden's mayor, Hon. F. N. McCorkle, has earned the gratitude of the many hundreds of soldiers by the installation of benches along the street curbs. A score or more In the downtown area and others in the parks have added a touch of comfort to outdoor Camden. Camden motorists watch out for soldiers. The trek from Public Relations Headquarters where some 300 to 400 enlisted men are quartered, II I "!- I is almost a grile. But few soldiers walk It. Motorists going north and sooth on busy Broad street stop their eafs when they see the soldiers and yell "Come on Buddie*, hop In." ? I And on Sundays many of the sob dlers get a surprise. A car stops and a Camden resident asks them to dinner. One .officer Who enjoyed Ihe hospitality of a Camden home re- , marked, "Utopia at last." But anyway, Camden has taken the boys of Uncle Sam to its heart. For many Camden families hare boys of their own in camp somewhere. Forest Fires and Back To School School children are back In school going; about the task ot learning all the thing that it takes to make useful citizens. The Kershaw County Forest Protective association advises that the scjUbol children are some of the test workers for folreht protection In the County. They not only study the value of our forest while school, but they also practice the protection of the forest while going to and from school. They know that the warming fires they use while waiting for the school bus must be put out; also a growing tree at their ages now will be large enough for other use when they become men and women. The state foyest service, working with the school children through their teachers, eudeavor to give the children first hand Information of the good work they are doing by telling them of their good work, by showing them the benefits of this through motion pictures, forestry quiz contests, tree planting demonstrations, and in some cases where the children actually help the forest warden suppress a* Cprest Are. ' "" 1 County Library I Reading Club Each year during the summer months the Kershaw County Library sponsors a reading club. .This summer it was an "All-American Reading Club," for pupils from the fifth grade through high school. This club was organized with an idea of developing a spirit of Americanism and we feel that It was really worth while. Thirty boys and girls were awarded certificates for reading ten books, eight fiction and non-fiction, and writing a short review on each book. All of the books had an American background. Some of the books read and reviewed were "Biographies of Famous Americans;" "Democracy Leaders," "Travels In United States and Alaska," "Skycrulser" by Brier, "Caddie Woodlawn," by Brink, "Away Goes Sally" by Coateworth, "Last of the Mohicans" by Cooper, "Hltty, Her First Hundred Years," by Field, "Jinx Ship" by Pease, "Call it Courage" by Sperry, and many others. The children completing the course were given an all-day trip to "SesquiCentennlal Park. Transportation for the trip was furnished by the American Legion. Had it not been for their generosity these boys and girls would not have had this enjoyable outing. Exercises were held at the park after a swim and picnic lunch. Mrs. j Helen B_ Marshall, of Columbia, District Library Supervisor, attended the exercises. Mrs. Leon Schlosburg,1 president of the American Legion Auxiliary, presented the certificates.' Patriotic songs were sung and the pledge to the Flag given, i ! BEAUTY CONTE8T AT ANTIOCH There will be a beauty conteet held at Antioch high school Friday, October 10, at 8:00 p. m. The candidates are all males. They will be dressed ip. evening dresses, hose, and high heel slippers. The winner will be named "Miss Antioch". After the contest the beauties will present a "Womanless Wedding" with ''Miss Antioch" as the bride. Besides the contest and wedding there will, be a box supper and several cake walks. Refreshments will be sold to the public. Don't forget to go to Antioch high school Friday night, October 10, at eight o'clock for plenty of fun and enjoyment. Shropshire, 67-year old negro citizen died at his hQm? here last Tuesday after a long illness. He was. born and reared at Liberty Hill, but moved to Camden a number 1 of years ago, and for many years had been employed by the Leonard Q rah am family as a caretaker on their estate. His wife died only a few months ago. He had a number of children, all now residing in northern states. Hts funeral was held from Trinity Methodist church Friday afternoon, and was largely attended.
