'Sanitized' Mattress
Frdsh, Clean, Hygienic
When a mattress has been "sanitized"
it becomes germ resistant
and odor repellent?-two most desirable
qualities. The new mattress
you buy may be clean and hygipnic
when purchased, but you can
readily understand that the ordinary
(unsamttzed) mattress will not necessarily
remain truly sanitary tor
long when in use in the home.
There are germs in the air.
Germs picked up in hurdling. Germs
from sleepers' bodies. All these
can get into the ticking of the ordinary
mattress and there they
thrive. The very warmth and
moisture of a sleeping body provides
ideal conditions for bacteria
to breed and offensive perspiration
odors to develop. Although a careful
housekeeper changes her bed
linens frequently, she can't launder
her mattress, and no matter how
thoroughly she brushes and airs it,
she doesn't in that way get full protection
and peace of mind.
Sanitized ticking definitely inhibits
germ growth. Even the tough '
hard-to-kill staphylococcus aureus
(the standard germ organism used
in the U. S. government approved
tests of antiseptic efficiency) does
not breed und multiply in the sanitized
ticking.
Sanitized ticking resists formation
of offensive body odor. A normal
person's perspiration is odorless as
it leaves the body. It is the decomposition
of perspiration by bacteria
that gives rise to unpleasant odora. By
preventing the action of such
bacteria, the sanitized mattress
stays fresh, clean-smelling and hygienic.
Vegetable Water Can Be
A Vitamin Filled Broth
If you have been listening, as you
most certainly should, to the widespread
advice on saving the water
in which vegetables are cooked you
may be looking for an Idea on how
to use this vitamin filled broth.
Say you have a cupful of essence
from cooked carrots, spinach, string
beans and potatoes, you may use it
to good advantage in a Bisque of
Salmon and Oysters.
First, combine this . vegetable ,
liquor and add enough water to
make the quantity measure 3 pints.
Add 3 veal or chicken bouillon
cubes and heat, stirring, until these
are melted. Then add 1 tall can of
red salmon which you have freed
of bone and flaked. Let these simmer
for 35 or 40 minutes.
Meanwhile, in the top of the
double boiler melt 2 tablespoons of
butter ant' blend in 2 level tablespoons
of flour. Add xh teaspoon of
salt, a dash of nutmeg, \\ teaspoon
of Worcestershire sauce, a trace of
cayenne and 1 tablespoon of minced
parsley and then stir in 1 cup of
top milk or thin cream and cook
this over boiling water, stirring
from time to time, for about 15 minutes.
Then stir the salmon mixture
into it and mix well and after that
pour it through a sieve pressing all
the substance that will go through
j with little persuasion from the
back of a spoon.
After it is sieved, reheat it but
on no account let it actually boil
again?just get it boiling hot. At
the last minute add a large tablespoon
of butter and 2 dozen oysters
that have been heated in their own
; juice until the edges curl, then
drain ed.

"I fervently believe that 'God
Bless America' is the moat Important
thing I have written In 35 years
us a composer of songs.
"There is u story behind 'God
Bless America.' I composed it over
20 years ugo, for the finale of a
play, 'Yip, Yip, Yaphank' which in
1917, I wrote for the soldiers when
I was Sergeant Berlin at Camp
Upton. As the boys were on their
ways to France, I didn't think it was
quite appropriate, so I put it aside
and wrote a new song.
"Two years ago I wanted " to
write a great American song about
peace," Berlin continued. "I was
on the lie de France, and returning
from London, where I had attended
the British premiere of 'Alexander's
Hag Time Band.' I had been
through the Munich crisis. When I
was home, nothing I wrote seemed
adequate. Then I remembered
'God Bless America.'
"I had to change the melody of
the middle bars and change two
lines which had a war-like note to
it: 'Make her victorious on land
and sea.'
"The lines I substituted read:
" 'From the njpuntalns, to the
prairies,
To the oceans white with foam,'
"When Kate Smith wanted an
especial song to sing on Armistice
day, I gave her 'God Bless America.1
The country began to sing ~
it over night, and yet it was not
published for a year /and a half
after that broadcast."

Kitchen 'Team'
A further step in the direction of
effortless housekeeping and greater
compactness and beauty in kitchen
equipment is a new electric dishwasher
installed with a twin basin
cabinet type sink.
The dishwasher is filled from the
spout of the sink, which is made extra
long, and emptied through the
sink drain. Thus the "tearing" of
the two units effects a saving in
plumbing materials as well as installation
cost.
The dishwashing unit is concealed
in an attractive all-steel cabinet harmonizing
with the rest of the kitchen
cabinets. Two sliding dish racks a:e
easily and conveniently loaded or unloaded
and provide sufficient capacity
so that dishwashing is nee sary
only once a day, at a convenient
time. The racks may ai a
be used for the storage of soiled
dishes for washing later.
The electric unit not only was > s
the dishes but also dries them. No
attention is requited while the machine
is in operation. Inasmuc: as
dishes are not in motion while Icing
washed, there is no danger of
breakage.
The dishwashing unit opens from
the front, thus making the entire
top available as work space.
Value of X-ray Machine
Much progress has been made in
late years in treating broken bonr*e
in the legs. There was a time when
they meant weeks in the hospital before
the patient could start the period
on crutches.
Thanks to a modern method of
making casts, hospital treatment is
not now needed in some cases of
broken bones, although other breaks
cannot be treated properly anywhere
except in a hospital.
For the quick and excellent way
nf learning exactly what a break is
like, we may thank the X-ray machine.
It makes it possible to take,
a photograph through the flesh, and
Lhc negative can be finished within
a few minutes when necessary.
