Tin' Italians were proud of their
African empire and their newly-built
navy, which was expected to make
the Mediterranean an "Italian lake."
For many years popular morale had

been recorded In the Mediterranean
The British warships have completely
dominated the "Italian lake"
although, with rare exceptions, they
have been unable, to bring the Italian
I ships Into ( lose contact for purposes
of combat. The other day. however,
a major collision occurred and the
gun-play lasted four minutes, with
disastrous results for the Italians.
The Italian fleet of three battleships,
eleven cruisers and fourteen
destroyers was badly mauled by a
British tb-ei of three battleships,
four cruisers, ail unknown number of
destroyers and, significantly, ope aircraft
carrier Planes attacking the
newest Italian battleship. crippling
the vessel, and then. without the
[vision that planes give to fleets, the
| Italian cruisers ran into the British
I battleships.
Losses have not boon finally determined
but not less than Hint* new
cruisers and two destroyers were
sunk by the Itritlsh without loss of
li!*c or d.milage to warships. This
was tin amazing demonstration of
British naval skill in combat with in* I
ferior Italian tactics, in addition to |
these losses, the Italians lost five
additonai destroyers in the Red Sear
1 ,sno miles away, off the shores of
Krittea --Orangeburg Times and I)etnoerat.
Thieving Polecats
Many of its who've had things
stolen have used the epithet "thieving

for such a remark.

month, bring the total number of warships
in service to 320. Secretary
Stimson urges qualified physicians of
draft age to apply for commissions in

that several thousand such posts are
available. In another announcement,
the War Department said that commissions
in the Regular Army will he
given to about 100 Reserve and N'attional
Guard officers this summer.
The Army has begun production on
.1 new 25-ton tank?otYictally described
as "superior to anything of its type in
the world"?-one year ahead of schedule.
The announcement coincided with
final Congressional action on the $4,.">93.221,174
fifth supplemental defense
appropriation, the greater part of
which will go for addtional weapons
and eifuipinenfc -for the Army. The
measure, which now goes to the
White House, carries funds for 4,750
bombers and new plants to produce
weapons for a 4.000,000-man military
machine. Secretary of War Stimson
states that more than 300 new Army
units will be created in .Iline and July,
when 14S.O00 selectees will be graduated
from .recruit replacement centers.
