Gets Under Way

wohjing, forge work, lathe operation, '
metal cutting and pipe fitting, drill

The present class has been filled
and applications to attend a second
c.lasa to be started in June ure now
being accepted.
The national shortage of skillod
workers for certain defense Industries
has made necessary this type of
Acetylene Welding
work. To Insure that the training
shall be of tho highest type possible
a local advisory board has been formed.
Acting on this board are Dozler
Davis, Perry Langaton, T. L. Merrill
and C. C. Shaw. These men are giving
valuable assistance in securing
the proper students, the necessary
equipment and supplies and in preparing
training courses. Q. E. McGrew
has been placed in charge as supervisor
of the work.
James Anderson, of the Camden
Machine Works, is the instructor. His
experience well qualifies him for the

work and the present success of the
class in the face of the many difficulties
connected with organization of
this^ypo work on short notion has,
largely "been due to his untiring efforts.
Bright blue flashes from the windows
of the basement have attracted
maivy visitors who have been curious
to know what is going on. The visitors
find that sand has been hauled
in. glare-proof curtains erected, ventilating
fans installed and every safety
precaution taken. Special goggles
and shields have been provided so
that not only the individual student
may work comfortably and safely, but
also that others may watch demonstrations
and study the proper
methods.
The public is cordially invited. The
class meets from 4 p. m. to 10 p. m.,
Monday through Friday In the shop
building on Laurens street, next door
to the high school.

Things I remember even now:?The
quartet of youngsters who used to
sinipon the street corners after church
hour on Sunday night, such old favorites
as "Kentucky Babe," "By the Old
Mill Stream" and "Sweet Adeline."...
Fifty cents dropped behind the wall of
a new house, when I was a kid and 50
cents was a lot of money... .The pear
plums that grew near the house as
large as peaches just as sweet, and
the bees that sucked the Juice from
them or stung a small boy The bitter
cold morning when I was dared to
stick my tongue on a wagon wheel
and did so to my immediate sorrow...
The box I bought at a "box social" and
the redhead who shared It with me...
"Protracted meetings" and the stacks
of fried chicken on the tables "on the
grounds.". . ."Safe In the Arms of
Jesus," sung softly and beautifully at
my grandmother's funeral. .Tho old
blacksmith shop and the mule that
wouldn't be shod... .Jar flies singing
in a mlipoea tree on summer evenings
and hoot owls calling from the wood
beyond the 4 house. .. .Shooting the
heads off Irylng chickens with a rifle
instead of catching them and chopping

the pulpit where his father, the late
Rev. John G. Riohards, served as pastor
for so many years.
We wore sorry to hear of the death
