books I found a copy of an old receipt
book which has the title The South'
?-rn Gardener and Receipt Rook' It
has 3-'9 pages and was published by
[one P. Thornton of Camden and was
; printed for the author in 1S40.
j "It is very interesting to read the
| receipts and remedies for the ills,
[both human and domestic animals,
j during the old days. The book was
my grandfather's. J 11. M litis' of
Edgefield. S. C. I am very anxious
to learn if this publisher has any
descendants in or near Camden, as
they may wish this book as an old
heirloom. I will thank you very much
if you can assist me in locating
them."

20, 1941, for induction into the United
States Army. The first two are to be
sent away and the latter two are alternates

Kirkwood Hotel
Ready For Season

The social life of the hotel will bo
built around the presence of the famous
War ten Ford Orchestra from
Greenwich, Conn., a musical organization
which has won fame as one of
the outstanding debutante bands of
the east. This band will take over at
The Kirkwood on February 1st with
a dancing party in the grill.
The tentative schedule calls for
regularly scheduled Saturday night
dances, and also dancing after the
bingo parties every Wednesday even- 1
ing. The hotel proposes a tea every'
afternoon with the orchestra providing
a musical background for guests.
In addition there will be a Sunday
evening concert every week in the
music room.
The Kirkwood golf course was
never in better shape than it Is at the
present time and players are enthusiastic
over the greens which they
describe as being the finest in the
south: Plans are being made to
bring Joe Kirkwood. famous trick
shot expert to the Kirkwood course
later in the season.
At the tenni3 courts, brick dust
brought from New England will be
used to surface the courts in prepara
tion for a series of tournaments and
also the appearance of a number of
tennis stars.

Mr. Shaw was bom and reared in
Lee county. He was one of the
pioneer merchants of Bishftpviile and
I was for many years connected wita a
' number of business institutions.
| On account of his age he retired
1 from active business several years
1 ago.
| He was the son of William Reese
iShaw and Mary Carnes Shaw, both
of I^ee county. He is survived by Mrs
Olivia Durant Shaw to whom he was
married over 50 years ago. He la also
survived by one half brother, Heary
C. Miller of Tatum.
President Roosevelt swapped New
Year's greetings with the King of
Italy. King Victor Emmanuel felicitated
Roosevelt: "On the approach
of the New Year I wish to express to
you. Mr. President, all my most cordial
good wishes for the people of the
United States and for you personally."
Roosevelt returned the greeting
by saying that he hoped during
1941 that "the Italian people may. be
enabled to enjoy the blessing of a
righteous peace."
