National Youth
A health examination and disease

following brief hints for special attention.^

Agronomy?Plow heavy clay land
now if practicable and make spring
work easier. Oats can still be planted.
Bow enough wheat to make a
good supply for home use. Don't
leave any cotton unprotected from
weather; it may lose five or ten dollars
per bale in value. Destroy at
once any remaining cotton stalks.
Begin preparing synthetic comp.-st
piles. Buy and apply limestone.
Horticulture.?Prepare land now for
setting ?rult trees in November and
December. Prune scuppernong type
grapes last of November. MaJko cuttings
of grapes and tigs and set thou;
out. Set strawberry and yaspborry
plants. Sow lettuce in ooldframe for
use In January and February. Mpke
hill selection of sweet potatoes forseed
at digging time, if this has not
already been done.
Insects and Diseases.?Disinfect
seed of small grain for smut control if
nocessary. Avoid diseased sweet potato
vines where selecting seed. Purchase
materials for dormant orchard
spray and overhaul spray equipment.
Fumigate woevll-infestod grain whero
practical. Plow under corn stubble,
covering It deeply to oontrol the southern
corn stalk borer. Plant oats on
wire worm Infested land and save velvet
beauts and crotalarla eeed fojr
interplanting. Reduce entrance to
beehives to two-Inch space for the
winter months, and feed bees where
necessary.
Agricultural Engineering.?Store
i corn and other grains in buildings
made rat-proof. Store cultivating
machinery and grease parts that are
likely to rust. "Plans of Farm Buildings
for Southern States" is the title
of a brand new publication now In the
flies of county agents' offices. Farmers
thinking of putting up new houses,
barns, or other buildings should get In
touch with the county agent regarding
this new plan service.
YOUNG MAN FATALLY
WOUNDED WHILE HUNTING
W. Hudson Davis. 21. son of Mr.
Hudson Davis of the Zoar community,
met almost instant dea.th on October
30th when a shot gun he was
handling accidentally discharged. He
was squirrel hunting accompanied by
a colored boy. They had cut down a
tree to get a squirrel hidden in a
hollow. According to testimony at a
Coroner's inquest Mr. Davis took hold
of the shot gun owned by the colored
boy, to move it out of his way. He Is
said to have grasped it by the barrel,
with the muzzle toward him. The
hammer seems to have caught on a
bush, firing the gun at very close
range. The load went into his right
side, ranging upward. He is believed
to have died within a minute. The
boy ran for aid.
Ho is survived by his wife and one
child, his father and mother and six
