THE ANSWER: The bear is the animal with which the raccoon
has much in common.
The raccoon is a busy and personable little dweller in the forests.
Nuts, cherries, wild grapes and various kinds of berries and grains
are acceptable in its diet. Insects, small reptiles, frogs, crayfish and
clams are relished and like its Larger relative, it will lie in wait for
any fish which it jpay scoop from its habitat. Its curiosity seems to
^ surpass that oTall other animals, a weakness which often leads to
its downfall. Common to most sections of the country, it is nocturnal
in its habits; is almost three feet in length and reaches a
weight of 25 lbs. and more. Four to six cubs are usually found in a
litter. Its outstanding characteristto^ that of carefully washing its
food before eating it. In captivity, raccoons make interesting pets,
as full of devilment as the most lively of youngsters.

New York. Sept. 4.?Vital defense
industries are leaving congested metropolltan
areas for rural or suburban
sites at an increasing rate. Leonard,
C. Yassen, local manager of the Kanktus
factory locating service, stated.
Changes in factory location, Yassen
s'aid, are being made with federal government
approval and in some cases
at government suggestion.
War industries' need for supplies
of skilled labor played an Important
part in the decision of many companies
to change their location. Also
important, Yassen added, was the site
of the factory with respect to vulnerability
to air uttacks.
A third vital factor, is was pointed,
was the necessity to establish factories
whoro quick additions to facilities
could be made. In areas already
crowded, this would be difficult or
even impossible.
Moving plans will be accelerated,
he said, by clarification of government
tax schedules covering of new defense
plants.

Negro Dies In Chair
For Double Slaying
Columbia, Sept. 6.?Sobbing that he
was "Sorry for what I done," George
Abney. 38-year old negro, was electrocuted
at the state penitentiary today
for the shot-gun slaying of Mrs.
Robert L. Rearden, wife of a Saluda
county farmer.
Abney was a tenant on the Rearden
farm. He shot the woman and his
own wife, Ella, March 20 in'an argument
over medicine they were trying
to make him take.
The condemned man asked for his
mother as he sat strapped in the chair,
but when he was told that the request
could not be granted, ho sobbed:
i "Then I gives up. Goodbye to you
all."
While the body was being examined
by Prison Physician Whitfield Cheatham
a spectator fainted and he was
| carried from the chamber blooding
from a cut on Ills head.
