Military geur dating from the eurIv Colonial period is so rare that | the discovery even of fragments of arms and armor used by the forefathers warrants recording. A recent visit to Yorktown and Jamestown, where many relics of the first settlements hi Virginia are being uncovered by archeologists working under the direction of the Colonial National park service, emphasizes this, writes Dr. Joseph K. Mayer in "American Collector." On Jamestown island, the site of active excavating, we visited the museum und were permitted to inspect the huge store of unclassified artifacts. The following list will give some idea of the richness of material brought to light. A fine series of chased brass bit bosses of the Seventeenth century. Four hilts from swept-hilt rapiers of the Seventeenth century. An extraordinarily well preserved basket hilt from a Jacobean broadsword. Two heavy gun barrels, apparently from Seventeenth-century muskets. Two deeply corroded pieces of iron which might have been matchlock plates. A flintlock of the type recognized as an English doglock and commonly used on military arms during the period of the English civil war. ^ Three doglock hammers. One battery or steel from a snaphaunce lock of the type dating from the early Seventeenth century. In the museum at Yorktown was seen that rarest of rare things, a piece of armor actually used in America. It was a helmet, called a cubasset, commonly used by the soldiery of Europe in the late Sixteenth and early Seventeenth centuries. Here was also seen another doglock. Many Plant* Abandoned By Steel Firms in U. S. Since 1926 the steel Industry has abandoned or dismantled a total of 173 blaat furnaces, 39 plants for producing ateel ingots and 144 plants for producing finished iron and steel products. The total number of employees in the industry, however, has increased sharply during the period. A new peak fbr the number employed in the industry was established in 1937, indicating that the improved technology of steel production has not decreased employment, while the total number at work in 1939 is substantially mgner uvan in 1926. These facts have been determined by the American Iron and Steel institute from a study of reports-furnished by companies in the indus- | try. Substantially all of the plants which were abandoned or scrapped had been rendered obsolete or inefficient by the improved technology of steel and iron production. Fewer than a dozen plants were abandoned as a direct result of mergers or consolidations. The decline in productive capacity from the abandonment of obsolete plants has been more than offset by the construction of new and more efficient plants and by the modernization of existing facilities. As a result, the Industry's present capacity for producing steel is 30 par cent greater than in 1926. Best Pleasures Listed The best pleasures are first, the simplest?pleasures which require least machinery, least effort on the part of others; second, the least expensive; third, the most accessible; fourth, those that can be most widely shared; fifth, those that can be most often repeated without doing harm to body, mind, or soul; sixth, those that call into action the highest qualities of life. The best pleasures are what we might call top; floor pleasures; that is, the pleasures of mind and spirit. If we test our pleasures by such laws as these, they will take us outdoors instead of indoors; to nature, and not to artificial things; to wholesome exercise, and not just to idle entertainment; to music, friendship, and books rather than to excitement and things that are artificial. Dog's Ufa The shepherd-spaniel of the late Mrs. Hattie A Fletcher of San Diego Calif., knows now what it is to be treated like a dog. When Mrs. Fletcher died in 1937 she left the dog $10,000 in her will, assuring it an easy and luxurious pW age. Recently a court decided in litigation over the estate that "provisions for trusts in perpetuity cannot be fulfilled by a dog," ordered the money turned over to another legatee And so the dog, now without a penny, an object of charity, was placed in a veterinarian home. mary.
