Win S. C. Tourney
Winner# in the South Carolina athletic
conference among secondary
school# were Mather Academy girls,
and Hooker Washington boyB. Trophies
wero awarded to these school#
and individual gold basketball# to the
member# of the teams, including the
trainers, at the closing of the sixth
aniaiul tournament, held at Mather
Academy. March.8 and 9.
Plaques were presented to Booker
Washington girls and to Mather Academy
boys, both of whom were runner
ups.
Sportsmanship trophies were
awarded to A. Hope and to John
Fields of Booker Washington..
The bov and the girl recognised for
having made the largest number of
points during the tournament were
Mattle Carter of Harbison and George
Eliot of Booker Washington.
Eighteen teams entered the meet?
eight were girls teams and ten were
boys. Schools represented were as
follows: Booker Washington, of Columbia;
Mather Academy and Jackson,
of Camden; Flnley, of Cheater;
Harbison, of Irmo; CouKer and Robert
Smalls, of Cheraw; Butler, of
HartsvlUe; and Avery and Immaculate
Conception, of Charleston.
Officials were K. H. Dtamond, of
Shaw; and T. H, G. Crawford, of Benedict.
According to Coach Martin, president
of the conference, there has been
a marked improvement in sportsmanship
each year since the conference
has been organized.

for March.
Agronomy. Make, save, and use
farm manures and compost in producing
crops. Before buying fertilizer,
study carefully the needs of your soil 1
for plant food to feed the plants
grown on that soil. Buy materials .
and mix fertilizer so that plants will
be supplied with food most needed.
Buy fertilizers containing 16 or more
units of plant food. Purchase enough
improved seed to grow your next 1
year's supply of seed, to maintain (
quality production. t
Horticulture. Set out fruit trees if 1
not already set. _ Plant , raspberries _
and blackberries any time this month. J
Prune and Bpray fruit trees. Apply |
spring fertilizer to orchards. Plant
hardy vegetables now. I
Insect# and Diseases. Treat cotton
seed to prevent damping-off and to (
obtain better stand. Remove bands <
from apple trees, scrape rough bark |
off, and kill the over-wintering cod- <

Country won the first game by a
5 tb 1 score and looked like a sure
winner in the second game last Sunday
when, with the sixth chukker
almost over and the blue clads leading
6 to 4, Ancrum Boykin of Town,
gtaged a scoring spree that tied up
the count at the bell.
In the never-to-be-forgotten overtime
period, a sudden-death variety,
loe Bates, affectionately termed "The
Knight of Wateree," nosed the woodan
ball from under an avalanche of
lorses feet and rolling it out to where
tie could get a healthy swing with his
mallet, sent It skittering over the turf
toward-the-Country goal,?
Reginald Sinclalre, playing defensive
back for the Country foursome,
Intercepted the ball and tried to drive
It out He topped the willow which
bad rolled but a scant ten feet when
Bates, swooping in on his pony swung
his mallet and the ball zoomed thru
the goal posts.
It was one of the most stirring and
exciting polo finishes seen here this
season and appeared to whet the appetite
of the fans for more sport this
coming Sunday.
Little Lancer, the DuBose pony that
scored the winning goal In a recent
Plnenuret game, took part In two
chuklcers labt' Sunday and much to
the regret of the big army of spectators,
failed to do any Bcorlng. Little
Lancer will be seen In action again
Sunday afternoon.
MR8. T. R. MACKEY DIED
TUESDAY MORNING
Mrs. Sallie Stover Mackey, 66, wife
of T. R. Mackey of Lancaster county,
died Tuesday morning at the home of
her daughter, .. Mrs. Curtis Mobley.
Mrs. Mackey was the daughter of the
late William Stover and Polly TYttgddale
Stover.

Funeral services were conducted
Wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock at
Elgin church with the Rev. J. W. McElwrath,
pastor, officiating. Interment
was in the church cemetery. ?
