Communist Dance
Aberdeen. Wash., Dec. 3.?Twentyfive
persons wero driven from a Communist
dance hall and the three-story
building partially wrecked by a crowd
of 400 or 000 last night.
The raid on the hall climaxed a
week of 111 feeling engendered by
scheduling of a Communist "victory"
dance in competition with a patriotic I
meeting of Finnish Immigrants and
sympat h/.ers
The Finnish meeting, meanwhile
was held on schedule two blocks away
marred by no unusual Incident.
The anti-Communist crowd gathered
in front of the dance building, i
Vnown as "Workers' Mall" or "Red
Hall." an hour before the dance was

began throwing stones through windows

cowered within.
When the crowd advanced upon the
building those within Med through a
rear door. The rioters battered down
the door, pulled siding from the walls,
ripped up Mooring, tore out plumbing
and telephones, threw radios from
second floor windows and smashed
every door and window in the struct

Another sure barometer Is the sale
or 1940 license plates by the state
highway department. Sales through
November 10, according to A.. W. Bohlen,
director of the motor vehicle division
of the department, totaled 214000
vehicles, or 20,000 more than for
the same period In 1938.
On top of these statistical evidences
are the indications that the tourist
truffle this year will bo heavier than
any since the boom years preceding
the depression In 1929. Tourist resorts
In the state are expecting record
numbers of visitors.?
The European war has caused
thousands of Americans to remuln on
this sldo of the ocean this winter,
and travel Hlgns all are pointing
southward. Florida Is looking forward
to a half-bllllon-dollar tourist
season?the heaviest In ten years.
Harold Colee, president of the Florida
state chamber of commerce, reports
that traffic already is 25 per
cent above that a year ago despite
the fact that the real season does not
get under way until December. He
forecast a Florida Influx of 2,600,0^0
during the season.
The normal winter (ravel to Europe
takes 4o(i.000 Americans abroad, most
of them among the wealthiest of
travelers. In addition to the stay-athome
policy of Americans this season,
general business Improvement over
the nation Is going to add to the tourist
movement.
Few of the millions who go to Florida
from the east and north miss
passing through South Carolina. Heretofore
most travel has been through
the low country, but the Piedmont
area Is expecting greater traffic this
year, feeding from the Smoky Mountain
section which Is due to attract
many visitors enroute southward.
Last month "Palmetto Progress"
published confident predictions from
Charleston. Camden and Aiken tourist
authorities that the new season
would be a banner one. Since then
other newspapers of the state have
investigated tourist possibilities for
the state and all have found that every
sign points to a prosperous period.
The Charleston chamber of commerce
rates the tourist business as
the city's major source of income,
and the flow of money into the state
is general as the tourist automobiles
move through, stopping for gasoline
and other automobile supplies, meals
and often for several days oi sightseeing.
