Sumter Proves Easy
For Bulldog Squad
Wallace "Red" Lynch, southpawed
the Bulldogs to a brilliant 11 to 3
victory over the Sumter diamond pastimers
at Sumter last Friday. Lynch
while us wild as a debutante at a
Jitterbug contest held .In a bed ot
poison Ivy, was also us stingy as the
proverbial Scotch miser, "lied" wa.K.ed
eight Guinocpcks, but fanned eleven
and gave up but three hits.
A handful of fuithful fans accompanied
the Bulldogs to the enemy
camp aud exulted at the complete tipover
of the dope bucket. Sumter fans,
a mere handful of them, sought to
spur their gladiators' to a win, but
-the Bulldogs were not U> be denied j
and they really looked big time stuff 1
in comparison with the home tots. I
Dividing honors with Lynch was
Herble Moore, premier shortstop of
the wrecking crew, who registered,
four hits out of Ave times at bat and
crossed the scoring blook the sumet
number of timeB. One of the swats j
Moore poled was a triple and ansther
a double.
Camden drew first blood when two
runs clattered over the rubber in the
second round. Sumter tied up the
count in the third but the Bulldogs
pushed a runner around tjie bags in
the fourth to take the lead.
In the sixth frame the Camden sluggertKreally
opened up thp flood gates
and when the deluge had. subsided,
five runs bad been tucked away in
the score book. The Bulldogs actually
staged a hash session, mixing hits
with errors, walks and a hit batsman
to register the quintet of markers.
Just to prove to the Sumter rooters
that the sixth inning relay race was
no fluke, the boys from over here put
on another scoring spree In the seventh
when several walks and an error
with a bunching of blows counted
three more runs to raise the total to
eleven.
Sumter got saucy In the eighth and|
managed to get a runner around after (
getting a life on an lnfleld bobble. J
Camden booted the play but four'
times during the nine rounds while
Sumter took a course in aviation and'
rang the error gong ten times.
Epps. who did the heaving for the
Gamecocks yielded nine hits, walked
three and fanned nine.

An Unusal Occurrence
Sheriff F P. Hill re port a whet may
well be termed "an unusual occur*
a lice." It seeuid that a mule was stolen
on Sunday afternoon. April 30. from
a share cropper on the farm of ldllle
I). Whaley and same wet* reported to
Sheriff Hill on the following Monday.
Sheriff Hill and Constable Whetstoiie
started an investigation, notilylng
officers in adjoining counties,
learning that a Sam Bennett, a
brother-in-law of the share cropper,
Dennie Keller, had recently moved
from Clarendon county to the Whaley
farm, the officers went to Clarendon
county and Investigated the record of
Bennett, and Interviewed all tilling
stations to iuquire if Bennett had
tried to buy '*gas for his mule." The
officers traced Beunett to Columbia,
where he took the wrong road and
headed for Camden. Neartng Camden
Bennett discovered he was on the
wrong road and turned around, but being
somewhat weary he tied the mule
to a tree and decide to take a nap. Ip
some way his overalls caught on fire
and a nearby white resident notified
SherllT Helse, of Hlchland county,'
that a crazy man with a mule was in
the nearby woods." Deputy Sheriff.
Kawlinson arrested the man. Sheriff
Hill accompanied by "Red" Holman |
drove over and recovered the' mule,
and later Sheriff Hill and Constable
Whetstone went to Columbia for Bennett,
who is now in the Calhoun jail
awaiting trial on May 22.?Calhoun

Each day Professor Hammond, prlnei- j
pal of the school, met the nurse and
the children at the Bchool. He check-j
ed over the list of those who were
supposed to be present, found out if i
they were prepared to pay the $1.50}
fee for the x-ray examination and
helped them find places in the bus.!
A teacher from the school chaperoned
the students on each occasion.
The last clinic for the Kirkwoodj
school was held Saturday, May 12. j
The Tuberculosis association anu ihoi

port that thirty-five of the positive
reactors from this school have had
their x-ray examination. The x-ray j
reports on twenty-nine have already |
been mailed to the children's family j
physician and the parents are now!
Boeing the physicians to find out If
any of the children need special care.
It is evident that parents in the Kirkwood
community have learned that
"a stitch in time saves nine," as far
as tuberculosis is concerned.
