The Camden chronicle. (Camden, S.C.) 1888-1981, February 24, 1939, Page PAGE TWO, Image 2
We received a call the other even-J
itig from a citizen residing on Fair
street. Upon reaching his home he
showed us a circular he plans on having
printed and distributed over tho
city. The circular Is self explanatory
and reads as follows:
Races
Freo Free
Speeding, daring, reckless drivers denying
death
Any time of day or night
Watch them apoed, giving no thought
to their own safety or the safety of
women or children
riaee of race#. Fuir Htroet In Camden

I'pon :ke request of the Fuir street
citizen, wo ttui on hi* voiHuula with
li I in ami mtw curs hurtling pa?t the
house at fifty am! nixty tulle* uu hour.
Many vvvre driven by young*torH,
ninny by colored n?en, u few by whito
men. All were traveling ut a high
rate of apeed.
"This happens day and night," auid
the Fair street citizen. "From Laurens
street to lluilo street is a school
zone, but to these drivers, it is the
place to hit the high mark in speed.
8oine 'day there is going to be a
tragedy.
* * *
Wo suggest to tho police department
that several arrests of these
speed demons will be an inducement
to curb this reckless driving.
Motored up to Fort Uragg last
Thursday. Took the route given me
by a motor organization and came
back on another, thereby reducing;
tho mileage by some eight miles.
Anyone going up that way will
find better roads, less curves and less
mileage if they go on No. 1 to Aberdeen,
thenc-e from Aberdeen to Raeford
and from liaeford to Fayetteville.
The recommended route by the
motor club outfit was No. 1 to Cheraw,
thence from Cheraw to Beunettsville,
thence to Laurinburg, Raeford
and Fayettevllle. Too many curves
and the roads are not bo good that
way.
A real patriot is one who can whistle
the Star Spangled Banner while
making out his lnsome tax.
Our Thlnkogram this week: If you
forget to drink, you won't have to
drink to forget.
Gosh Bill, maybe you can help me
out. I've bought my city license and
my state license. Whore In Sain Hill
do I go to buy a poetic license?
?
We sure had a swelltgant time a
the Hobkirk Sunday evening, wha
with singing and trying to sing. The
folks are sure going for these com
munity sing affairs In a big way.
We want to dedicate a little bit of
verse to Bill Nettles, head of the
Camden Boy Scout group. It Is enti
tied "Scout's Honor," and we believe
it should be inscribed to every Boy
Scout. So here goes:
Tis the Scout's Honor, Daddy."
I heard my young son say
How strange those simple words
Should all my fears allay
In boyish tones "Scout's Honor"
Rings resonant and true;
It gives a reassurance
As nothing else can do.
Mnv the power of his slogan
Guide his feet in times of strife
And the spirit of "Scout's Honor '
Be with him till his life."
As the facetious headwriter remarked
last week, "The Skipper invites
Disaster." And how. 'Twas the
first time in ten years yours truly
served as a song leader and our (liscevery
of broken tunc pipes, etc., was
dismaying. But we still put the blame
on the sentimental individuals who insisted
on having Ben Boldt and a
few other drag-out sobby numbers
for tin1 program.

But there should be lots of fun over

disconcerting. The same condition
prevails on the highway leading InTo

We agree with the governor that
these unsightly piles of broken dov a

beauty of the highways and is to he
deplored.
Dame Rumor and the little birdie
from the tree outside the window
mils us of the organization of the
Camden Golf club And that the golf
club will seek to sell enough memberships
to raise a fund to put grass
greens on the Kirk wood course.
We humbly suggest to the promoters
of the renovated golf course that
they consult some one who understands
the building of grass greens,
which require among other things,
proper drainage. A cheap Job will
I
not improve the golf situation in
Camden at all. The competition is
growing keener every year between
some five communities in the midsouth
and the golf tourists are going
where the golfing is best. Bear that
in mind lads.
Bert Dolan, Milwaukee Journal executive,
who with his wife, were in
Camden for the horse show and hunter
trials, tells me he has seen some
of the biggest horse shows in the Chi
cago area and while the surroundings
were superior to the show ground
here, the jumpers did not possess
half the class. Dolan plans to come
down to Camden next season for a
stay of a month.
Some of the folks who have been
grumbling because of the sand and
debris cluttering the streets In the
downtown district will be glad: t(*
know the city Is purchasing a new
sweeper, to replace the one that broke
down. j
? |
And we understand the city hall H
building is to be painted and that a I
shed for the storing of city motor I
equipment will be built. The town is 1
sure waking up under the minlstra- I
tions of a peppy administration. Car- I
ry on lads.

The answer, brewers realize, ties in with the
distribution of their mild, wholesome beverage
through responsible retail outlets. Obviously,
the brewers can enforce no laws. But they can
? and will?cooperate with all law enforcement
authorities to the end that retail beer
outlets give no offense to anyone.
May we send you a booklet giving interesting
