KERSHAW COUNTY FORE8TRY PROTECTIVE ASSOCIATION For the first half of the fiscal year of 1938-1939, Kershaw county has had *>6 fires with ? total loss- of 715-.3 ae-Foa as compared with the flrst half of the fiscal year 1937-1938, with 35 fires and a total loss of 229 acres. The greater part of these flrps for both 1938 and 1937 were caused by smokers and hunters. The Increase in the number of fires and the area burned for this year was partly due to i the dry weather oondltlons. I The association has put out and is putting out every possible efTort to prevent and to suppress all fires that do get out as fast as possible, but without the cooperation of the people It can do very little. The Rev. Charles E. Burts, D.D., of St. Matthews, will preside. Each of the three vice presidents are expected to attend: The Rev. John M. Wells, D.D., of Sumter; Hon. John O. Richards, of Liberty Hill; Dr. J. C. Ropor, of Oaffney. The Rev. M. C. Collins, of Batesburg, is Recording Secretary. The Rev. F. Clyde Helpis, of Columbia is treasurer. The Rev. Albert D. Betts, of Orangeburg, is executive secretary. J. J. Lawton, of Hartsville, is- president emeritus, and a leader of groat Influence and wisdom. Dr. S. J. Derrick, of Newberry college, will deliver the principal address of the morning. President Burts will give his annual message. Mrs. J. L. Minis, state president of the ! Woman's Christian Temperance Union, will participate in the program. Executive Secretary Betts will give his annual report. Other messages and Interesting features are being planned. At 2:30 p. m., there will be a business session composed of the members of the executive committee and the elected delegates from the various counties. All persons interested in the temperance cause are invited to attend the Temperance conference at the morning hour. This call will bringtogether in the state's capital city a most representative group of citizens who are interested in the moral wel| fare of our commonwealth. Charlotte Aviator Is Killed | - Rock Hill.?Tom H. Gable, 27-year t old*1 Charlotte, N. C., novelty dealer, was fatally injured in the crash of his private airplane near the Rock Hill city limits Wednesday. Gable was returning to Charlotte after participating in the air games at Miami, Fla., last week. Witnesses Bald the | plane crashed head-on after it had1 zoomed over a tree. They were un-1 able to say what caused it to fall. His father, L. A. Gable, Sr., of Charlotte, who came here upon receiving word of the crash, said Tom had been flying about two years.
