Engagement Announced Mrs. Joseph Knuekley announces the engagement of her daughter, Marie Teresa, and Ernest P. Sheheen, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. Shoheen, of Camden. The wedding will take place in the Bpring. Hosts at Barn Dance One of the delightful social events of the week was the barn dance which Mr. and Mrs. William M. Coxe gave Thursday evening in the ball room of the Hobkirk Inn. Bales of hay, corn stalks, and other farm products were the appropriate decoratlohs for the party and music for the occasion was furnished by Ted Weigand's Hobkirk Inn orchestra. The one hundred guests, many of whom were from surrounding towns, came dressed in costume and prizes for the most attractive were won by Mrs. Thomas Ancrum and JoetMcKain. During the evening weinerU,4 cofTee, I doughnuts and punch were served. Among the out of town guests were Mr. and Mrs. T. C. Coxe. Jr., Mr. and Mrs. B. E. T. A. Potter, of New York and Aiken. Held Bridge Benefit Twenty-three tables were in play at the bridge tournament sponsored by the Camden Hospital Auxiliary Wednesday afternoon at the Court Inn. Mrs. J. W. Brunson and Mrs. G. S. Rname, assisted by members of the auxiliary, were the committee in charge and the party proved to be a delightful social event as well as a means of raising funds for hospital work. Prizes were generously donated by DePass' Drug store, The Fashion Shop, City Drug Company, Hoffer Jewelry Company and Barringer Hardware Company. These were won by Mrs. Lambert DePass and Mrs. T. Lee Little for first and second high scores, by Mrs. Walter Hudson for bidding and making a slam, and by Mrs. L. T. Mills for the low score. Mrs. E. M. Mauldin and Mrs. John Cantey last held the two floating prizes. The bull's horn thron, an acacia tree of South America, protects an army of acacia ants in its branches, for its own protection. The ants feed on the tree's honey, and live inside its hollow "thorns. guarding the tree faithfully and riving off all other jnsects. "THE HOTEL DOLLAR" WAS SUBJECT OF TALK AT ROTARY The regular meeting Of the Camden Rotary Club was held at the Hotel Camden Thursday, January 19. The program was In charge of Irving Pierce. He had aa hla speaker, Mil-' ton C. Smith, manager of the Kirk-j wood Hotel. Mr. Smith had as hiB subject "The Hotel Dollar." He ex-( plained what happens to your dollar, when you enter a hotel and proved to' everyone's satisfaction that when you 8tfty~nta hotel, the owner is not able' to retire on what he garners from you. * Mr. Smith stated that he be-j lleved that all of the present hotels' In Camden are doing everything in' their power to bring back the busi-j ness of the 1920's. However, he stated that it would take at least three' I years before any appreciable improve-j ment could be noticed. W. C. McCarley was a guest. Rotarian Harry Whitehouse, of Johnston, Tenn., wasi present. BUI Pitts and William1 Brown of the Camden high school se-1 nior class wore guests of the club. A. J. Steinberg, a tobacco representative, distributed sample cigarettes. A duet was rendered by Stan Llew-| ellyn and Father Burke. Met With Mrs. Zemp. Mrs. J. B. Zenrp was among the bridge hostesses who entertained during the week. Her party was given Thursday afternoon for members of her club and the^ following additional guests: Mrs. John deLoach, Mrs. John Mullen, Mrs. Edward Leadley, Miss Ethel Yates, Miss Henrietta Zemp, Mrs. W. L. Goodale and Mrs. R. N. Shannon. The afternoon's scorers were Mrs. Jack Whitaker, Jr., and Miss Lillian Yates. non. I Mrs. Marye Was Hostess | Mrs. Robert Marye gave a lovely party at her home Wednesday evening when she entertained at a seated dinner party for twelve guests. Lighted white tapers and fallow and white garden flowers formed the pretty spring-like centerpiece for the dinner table. In the contract games which followed top score prize went to J. B. Zemp and low prize to Mrs. E. N. McDowell. "St. Elmo's Fire," curious crackling jets of flame, sometimes lights up the riggling of ships during thunder-, storms. The phenonenon is due to a harmless form of electrical discharge.! i That polo i? appealing more aiul moro to the popular taste was evidenced last Sunday when a record attendance witnessed the final gamo of the Devlne cup aeries, In which Town defeated Country to take possession of the cup. On Sunday the Officer's team of the Fort Bragg army post Is playing a picked foursome of the Camden polo club. In a return match. Camden defeated Fort Bragg lu their first meeting two weeks a$o. Harry D. Kirkover has announced a busy week for February 17 through February 22. On Friday, February 17, ji the Camden Hunt will meet. The', Virginians' horse show will be held on Saturday. February 18. On Sun- ' day, February 19, there will be a polo match on the No. 1 flpld. Monday, February 20, the Hunter Trials will take place and on Tuesday morning the Camden Hunt wlll_meet followed fin the afternoon by a polo game. The grand climax of the week will be the Washington Birthday races at Springdale on February 22, when hunt racing in the United States officially opnes Its 1939 season. Mr. Kirkover, Judging by advance notices and entries, anticipates keen competition in all of these events.
