Persons who for years have searched
the muddy waters for the legendary
strong box were rewarded yesterday
when It was located at a point 22
miles from Cheraw near the old Camden
road.
According to one story stragglers
from General Sherman's army during
the War Between the States stole
the safe from a Columbia bank, drop?
ping it into the creek with the intention
of returning later to explore its
contents.
Another story says that robbers 7')
years ago stole the strongbox from a
Camden bank and. while fleeing, it
fell Into the creek when their wagon
overturned.
At any rate, divers said the mystery
probably would be cleared up be- j
fore nightfall

Cotton Festival To
Be All-White Affair
The Camden cotton festival, ,to be
hold on Thursday, October 6, will be
mi all-white affair, according to a decision
reached ut a recent committee
meeting.
After a discussion with leadors of
the colored group, it was decided that
to avoid confusion in the program, the
affair be conducted for white fanners
and that later a similar event can be
arranged for the colored farmers of
Kershaw county. 1
The program will begin at 9 A. M.
when a series of contests will be conducted
on Rutledge street between
Broad and Church streets. Th^s part
of the street will be roped off for the
entire day. The committee in charge
of sports and stunts program is headed
by Donald Morrison and Jake Havnes
as co-chairman, who have seven other
committee workers to aid them In
making their part of the day's events
a big success.
W (\ MeCarley, chairman of the
farm floats committee, with the able
assistance of Mrs. Kathryn Watts and
Miss Margaret Fewell as co-chairman
will have a galaxy of appropriate
floats In tin- afternoon parade. Mrs.
Jack Mullen is in charge of the committee
handling the decorated cars
<ind organization floats.
Mrs. Mullen will have the assistance
of the Boy Scouts in the handling of
this part of the parade.
The decorating of the city and business
houses is iti charge of a committee
headed by Jack Nettles aud
Clyde Mass&beau as co-chairman. Already
this committee has conferred
with a decorating firm and It is certain
that Camden will be in gala
dress for the event. ,
The part to be played In the program
by the Charleston police band
will be far reaching. The band will

give 'concerts at intervals during the
day and will also lead the big parade
In the afternoon.
In the.evening, the committee headed
by Elihu Schlosburg will take
charge of affairs and the pavement
dance promises to attract a largo
turn-out of "steppers". There will be
two orchestras on hand and the round
dances will be alternated with square
dances with Honest John Laney and
Clyde Massabeau doing the "calling."
The street where the dance will be
held is to be decorated by the city
light department with garlands of
electric lights. A loud speaker system
will carry the music to all parts of
the dancing arena.
The cotton brokers have outlined a
tentative program for their part of the
celebration. Announcement is made
that cash awards will be made for the
best grade of cotton submitted to lite
committee, for the longest staple cotton
and for the cotton coming from
the greatest distance from Camden.
The contest program will be lim- i
ited to eight events, four in the morn- i
ing and four in the afternoon. The two*
outstanding stunts will be the bus-J
band calling contest for women and!
the hog calling contest for men. There!:
will be a prize offered to the largest!;

family present from outside the city,
also for the tallest man and fattest
woman.
The contests to bo decided Upon
will be announced In the programs to
be mailed to every box holder In Kershaw
county. Fine cash awards will
be given to first and second place
winners in all these events.
The actual time of the broadcast
over WIS will be announced uext
week. The luncheon for distinguished
guests will be given at the Camden
hotel at 1 o'clock. Brief talks will be
given by the guests of honor and
later they will be heard ever the a:r
More complete details of the festival
program will be announced at a
later date. All committees are working
on the various units of the program
and if the weather man is in a
pleasant frame of mind the festival
will be a huge success.
Revival At Blaney
The Rev. W. B. Cranford, of Spottsylvania,
Va., will help the Rev. J. C.
Cunningham, pastor of the West Kershaw
Circuit of the Methodist church,
In a revival service at Blaney, starting
Friday evening, September 17. The
public is cordially invited to hear this
man of God preach each evening during
this series of meetings.
