I am In hearty accord with the statement. The president should not be criticized by my friends for Intimating that such a statement had been made by me. "1 was the original author and sponsor of the 8mlth-Burnet Immigration law, which began our policy of restricting importation of cheap foreign labor Into this country to compete with American labor. "During my entire service I have advocated higher wages for mill employes. In 1934, I realized that recovery could not he had by reducing the purchasing power of the people and I voted to restore the wages of govern inent employes which had been reduced as a result of the president's economy program. 1 did this because I know the wages of government employes affect the wages of employes! In private Industry and I have always advocated the Improvement In tinwages. . wage scale of workers in j South Carolina and the nation. "In like manner, when the president as part of his economy program, brought about a reduction in the compensation of veterans, I did not believe that they could live on the amount they received and I voted to restore the amounts that had been taken from the veterans and when the president vetoed the bill, I voted to | over-rkle his veto. When the President heard this, he wrote a letter, dated September 26, 171)2, directly to Mr. Mercer, Haying; "I come now to another S>art of your letter, and in touching upon It, do not scruple to declare to you that I was not a little dlapleased to find by u letter from Capt. Campbell to a gentleman in thlu neighborhood, that my name had been freely used by you or your frlenda for electioneering purposes, when 1 had never associated your uame and the election together; und when there had been the most scrupulous and pointed caution observed on iny part, not to express a sentiment respecting the fitness or unfitness of any candidate for repre sentutive that could be construed, by the most violent torture of words, Into an interference in favor of one, or to the prejudice of another. "Conceiving that the exercise of an Influence (if I really possess any) however remote would be Improper; us the people ought to be entirely at liberty to choose whom they pleased to represent them in congress. Having pursued this line of conduct steadily, my surprise and consequent declaration can be a matter of no wonder. . . That such a measure would have been Incompatible with the rule I had prescribed for myself, and which 1 had invariably observed, of not interfering directly or Indirectly, with the suffrages of the people, in the choice of their represents t^ves. ..." President Washington did not stand for executive dictation to congress or to the voters. He did not undertake to say who should or who should not he elected to congress. Those who occupy the position that George Washington filled with so great distinction, would be well advised to follow his example. Under the rules of the party, all precincts having an enrollment of fifty or more voters will observe the Australian ballot regulations. Attention is called to the resolution of the State and County Executive Committees whereby County Chairmen and other county and club -officials are cautioned and Instructed to strictly enforce the law and rules regulating absentee voting, and the attention of Enrollment Committees and Club Secretaries is especially directed to the rule providing that applications for absentee ballots must be made in writing to the enrollment committee or club secretary of the club where the absent voter is enrolled at least five days before the primary election In which the voter wishes to vote, and to the provision hat these written requests must be preserved and turned over to the manjgers of election dn the day of the election, Polls will open at 8 o'clock a. m and close at 4 o'clock p. m. except at Camden No. 1, Camden No. 2, ner. milage and Wnteree. at which precincts polls will open at 8 o'clock a iu. and close at tl o'clock p. m.
