Hog Sanitation Plan
Wards Off Trichina
Clemson, July 31.?A strict adherence
to the swine sanitation program,
as developed by the United States Bureau
of Animal Industry and now belng
promoted in South Carolina by ttic
Extension Service and cooperating
agencies, will aid in preventing the
spread of small parusites known as
trichinae, says J. It. Hawkins und A.
L. DuRunt, extension livestock specialists.
These parasites when present in
hogs, they explain, causing a disease
called trichinosis may affect consumers
of pork that is not thoroughly
cooked. Tiiis is an additional reason
why farmers should follow the sanitation
plan in producing hogs.
Inasmuch as investigations conducted
in the Rureau have shown that
trichinae are much more common in
garbage-fed hogs than that*- in hugs
not fed 011 garbage, it is essential to
stress that the feeding of raw garbage
tends to spread trichinosis among
swine. Other sources of trichinosis
in swine are: The feeding of offal
from slaughterhouses; the feeding of
the contents of scrap barrels; the failure
to bury, burn or otherwise dispose
of animals which die on lots
and pastures and which may be"eat< n
by hogs.
The sanitation system precludes the
feeding of garbage, offal, kitchen
scraps, and other feed containing
scraps of raw pork, and involves the
use of clean pastures and sanitary
housing. This system decreases the
cost of swine production, favors tho
growth and development of pigs, and
finishes pigs for market at 6 or 7
months of age. The system, if carried
out as recommended, will reduce,
if not eliminate altogether, trlchiuosis *
in swine, since it removes most of
the known sources of trichinae.
June traffic fatalities numbered* 2,860,
a drop of 90 from last years' June
total, in spite of an estimated 2,000,000
mile increase in motor travel.

OUCH!
..While the wife and the klda are
away from home in vacation, I aat
about and about, but mostly at a
certain place. Being on a diet, I do
not undertake to handle but 2 meals
per day, via: breakfast at 7:30 and
lunch-dinner at 1:30.
. .Today I selected from a muchly var
led menu the following to wit: a beautiful
blond waitress with blue eyes
and everything; netft came corn-pone,
pimento', potatoes, butter, tea, peas of
course, and barbecued hash.
I
..Everything was fine, Including the
waitress. As soon as I- touched that
barbecued hash, I noticed a few sparks
fly off my fork. That was enough
to let me know that that hash was
hot, and was it hot? (I had already
observed that it had red and black
dust sprinkled all over it).
..The waitress stood right over me,
bless her heart; I didn't want to complain
about the hash being too hot
for consumption, much less typhoid
fever. I couldn't possibly afford to
hurt her feelings. She weighs 118,
and has a Follies figure, painted finger-nails
and the cutest hands.
..I forked in a bite of the hash, and
immediately grabbed a gulp of iced
tea. I began to shed large, over-sized
tears. She asked me who was dead,
and I told lier, "my grandma." She
really is dead, 1885. I have got plenty
! of table manners, I knew I'd have to!
! eat that hash regardless.
..The flrat time I wiped my mouth,!
the napkin caught on tire. I tookl
a swag of iced-tea immediately after!
