Carolina as to the Hoosier State:
What is a good preventive for chiggers?
Answer-Apply photographers' 'by.
PO" (hyposulphite of soda) or flower
of sulphur to the legs and lower body
before subjecting yourself to chlgger
territory or stay out of tall grass and
weeds. Chloroform applied to chlgger
bites gives instant relief but application
must be repeated after several
hours.
It is true that Isinglass Is a by-product
of fish?
Answer Isinglass Is manufactured
from the entrails of fish. This much
used material, a form df gelatine, was
formerly made chiefly from sturgeon.
What Is the hellgramite that Is used
for flsh bait?
Answer?This excellent stream bait
la the larva of the Dobson fly. Hellgramltes
spend nearly three years living
under rocks In fast water, then
pupate In the soil and emerge as the
adult fly.
Are rattlesnakes rendered permanently
harmless when their fangs are
removed ?
Answer?The rattlesnake and copperhead,
can be rendered harmless
only by destruction. They have several
pairs of auxiliary fangs behind the
functional ones. Herpetologlsts claim
these become effective shortly after
accident or shedding.
Do trees continue to grow the year
'round?
Answer?Practically all of the twig
growth of a tree takes place during
the spring over a period of about a
month. Most of the daily growth Is
made during the early morning hours.
How long does a frog remain in
the tadpole stage?
Answer?With common species it
takes three to four months,' but with
bullfrogs the tadpole development requires
two years. Cold weather or a
scarcity of food may delay metarmorphosls,
causing the common species
to hibernate undeveloped the first
year.
Are figures available on the number
of dogs In the United States?
Answer?A recent estimate shows
15.0W.000 dogs in this country, 9,000,000
of which are licensed and over
2,000,000 pedigreed. These animals
represent an Investment well over
twenty million dollars.
Can fish hear people talking in a
boat?
Answer-No. The internal ears
and minute nerve cells connected to
scales on the sides of flsh record only
aound waves in the water. Sound
that does not create vibration* in the
water; cannot be heard by flsh. Shout
your loudest but don't bang the bobtorn
of the boat.
Are mussels dependent on flsh life
for existence?
Answer Yes. When young mussels
(Olochftia) are discharged from the
brood poucli their only chance for life
is in damping themselves on to the
bodies, gnu or fins of flsh where they
are actual parasites for several weeks.
Is It true that mosquitoes can bite
only onoet
Answer?Absolutely not. They can
and do bite often so long as theli
proboscis Is uninjured. Only the f*
