Kershaw Negro | Commits Suicide The' body of Will Truesdale, 48year-old negro of Kershuw wan found Saturday afternoon around 2:30 bus-| ponded by chains from the bare above ; the upper bunk in )<1b cell In the city Jail. Truesdale, who for several years ! had been in ill health and previously j had attempted suicide four times was placed in jail for sufe keeping alter he hud ran amuck Friday going to several of his friends' homes trying to borrow a gun and shells with which to kill himself. It was stated that at one of the homes at which Truesdale tried to secure shells another negro appeared with a gun, threatened Truesdale telling him to leave or else he would kill him. Truesdale although trying to commit suicide became thoroughly frightened and raq^ The chains from the lower bunks in the cell had been removed, tied together and secured to the bars above the upper bunk in the cell, then dropped over the edge of the berth and were tied around the man's neck. Death was due to strangulation. Some of -the town officials at the time were in Lancaster preparing papers for the removal of Truesdale to the government hospital for the injane as he was a World War veteran ind well-known in this community.? Miss Watson is a student of Winthrop ollege, and Miss Flaherty is a nfemt>er of the school faculty in Aberieen, N. C., for the coming year. Motor Travel On The Increase Charlotte, N. C., July 10.?One of he outstanding developments in the ?arly purt of the travel season has jeen the tremendous upward surge of transcontinental motor travel, Coleman W. Roberts, president of the Carjlina Motor club was advised today Dy A A A. headquarters. "Almost unanimously our affiliated clubs are telling of a strong gain in ons-dlstance travel, with touring between the Atlantic and Pacific coasts Accounting for a large part of the increase. The Western states report that already the number of visitors from the east is running well ahead :)f last year and expect a gain of ibout 25 per cent In the volume of motor travel. "There is little question that the using of border restrictions by some >f the states west of the Mississippi I liver is playing an important part in this growth of transcontinental touring. It is possible that some of -the reports as to border barriers were somewhat exaggerated, but there is uo question that the numerous comilaints /on this score were threatening to have a very real detrimental effect on travel through those states. "Rather than risk a chance of losing the valuable tourist partonage, with its golden harvest of expenditures, several of the states most complained against have taken definite steps to ease the restrictions and made certain that officers at border stations handle their duties with the maximum of courtesy and the maximum of efficiency. As a result, crossing the lines of any of the states is generally speaking hardly more than a formality and so far this year very few complaints have been received. 'As a direct result of this improved situation, it now appears that western 1 ravel is just beginning its biggest and most prosperous year." Mr. Roberts also pointed out that many westeners are coming eastward to the ( arolinas. "There is a very perceptible increase in the number of cars with western license plates at our mountain and coastal resorts this year," he said "While many of our people are vacationing in the west many westerners are seeking recreation in the Carolinas."
