"The Bureau of Agricultural Economics
reports that by the end of
April, muny butcheries were setting
only enough eggs to till orders alreudy
roc^lved," says Mr. Gooding. "On
May 1, advance orders called for less
than hulf us many chicks us on that
day a year ago. The Bureau predicted
some time ago that seven to ten
per cent fewer chicks will be hatched
this spring thun lust spring.
"Poultrymen have been slow ull
season lu ordering chicks, largely because
of the high cost of feed compared
with egg prices. And now as
the hatching season neurs the end.i
poultrymen are slowing up still more
with their chick orders. Advance orders
on May 1 ranged from 45 per
cent less than a year ago in the South
Atlantic states to 63 per cent less
than a year ugo in the Rocky Mountain
states.
"In April, hatcheries set nearly 20
per cent fewer eggs and hatched nearly
eight per cent feyer chicks than
i in April a year ago. Throughout the
month, poultrymei^ continued to cancel
their orders for chicks."
Mr. Watson Dies Near Bishopville
Rishopville, June 14.?Johnnie T.1
Watson, of near Bishopville, died at
his home tonight after a long period
of declining health.
Funeral services will bo conducted
at Cedar Creek church Wednesday at
10 o'clock.
Surviving are his widow and the
following children: H. D. Watson, of
Hartsville; Miss Mae Watson, J. T.
Watson and Gordon Watson, of Bishopville;
two sisters, Mrs. J. W. Arrant,
of Detroit; Mrs. J. L. Smith, or
Bishopville; three brothers, H. I).
W.atson, F. O. Watson, and C. L. Watson,
all of Bishopville.
Following the reported torpedoing
of the Spanish steamer City of Barcelona
off Malgrat last Sunday, with the
loss of 200 or p^ore lives, the sailboat
Granada was reported sunk on Monday
with 20 shots off Cambrills, with
one man killed and seven others, all
wounded, reaching Tarragona on
Tuesday in a rowboat. Catalonlan authorities
charge the sinking of the
Cityof Barcelona to an Italian suhma |
rine, while the Spanish insurgents
say It wag caused by a mine.

Large Increase
In Rail Traffic
Railroad passenger li afTit' the first
part of this year increased in some
Instmict'H as much aa 50 per cent over
last year, a I'nitud Press nation-wide
survey showed recently.
Tlte largest increase occurred on
the Baltimore & Ohio, where 51 per
cent more passengers were carried
so far this year than during the period
from June to December, 1036.
Revenue on lite line during this same
time Increased 15 per cent. Throughout
the year 1936 the lialtlmore &
Ohio had an Increase of 48.3 per ceut
fu volume, und 13.1 per cent In revenue.
The significant point in these figures
Is the fait that volume and revenue
Increases showed the largest gain
beginning in June, 1936 It was on
June 2, 1936, that the Kastern railroads
reduced their fares following
orders from the Ihterstate Commerce
Commission. Previously, the fares
were 3.6c per utile, with the railroads
also receiving a sutchurge of 50 per
cent on Pullman accommodations.
The I. C. (3. ordered fares lowered
to 3c u mile, first class, and 2c a mile
