NEGRO BOY IS BADLY HURT FROM BLOW ON HIS HEAD Aaron Whitaker, negro ' boy, 17 years of age, was struck a blow on the head Sunday about noon aud is in the hospital with slight chances of recovery. Buddie Brisbane, negro boy of about the same age, is in the county jail, awaiting the result of Whitaker's injuries. The Brisbane boy wielded a "grab" rake and struck Whitaker from behind. A hole was knocked into his skull and the brain was penetrated. It is not known what the row started about, but Brisbane is said to have stated at the jail that Whitaker had previously bounced a rock off his head, but he hud no bruises to exhibit. Miss Mary Eleanor Goodale accompanied them home for the week end. YOUNG BARFIELD CHILD MEET8 DEATH FROM SCALDING WATER Logoff,. May 4.?Little Norma Jean Bar field died Friday, April 23, at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe D. Barfleld. Death came as a result ol burns received when she fell into a bucket of scalding water. She lived about seven hours after the accident. She was slightly over two years of age and leaves one sister, Ruby Daphane, about seven months old. She also is survived by her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. E. B. Barfleld, Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Branham, several aunts, uncles and cousins who mourn her passing. Little Jean s death came as a great shock to all the community. Jean was loved by all who knew her. 1 The funeral was held at Pine Grove Baptist church Saturday evening at ,.4:30, conducted by the Rev. Alburn, jOf Columbia. i The pallbearers were Frank Raboti, 'Lee Jackson, Ernest Doweiy and Arthur Dowey. Skating Rink Soon To Open Camden's outdoor skating rink, under course of construction at the corner of Laurens and Broad streets, will be ready for the merrymakers Saturday, May 15, according to Herbert Campbell, WPA supervisor In charge of construction. The skating rink is 120 feet long and sixty feet wide and will have as smooth a surface as skilled concrete surfacers can provide. It is proposed to install permanent benches along each side of the rink. While the rink will be utilized chiefly for the entortainment of children, plans are being made to have skating parties for adults. May Day Festival The annual May Day Festival, sponsored by the Woman's Auxiliary Bethesda Presbyterian church, will be a lovely event of Friday afternoon, May 7, taking place on the lawn of the churchyard. A one-act operetta, "Mother Goose LAnd," will be given by the Magnolia kindergarten, directed by Miss Sara Wolfe and Mrs. G. Selwyn King. Mrs. Joseph Brunson will take the solo partB. The queen, who will be crowned by "The Spirit of Spring," will be chosen by the guests present. There will be Junior and senior dances before the court.
