The 100,000 tons of steel in the structure, longest span of Its type ever built, would fully load a freight train 20 miles long. Those are merely a few of the amazing dimensions of the $35,000,000 bridge that will be opened to traffic in May, four months later than originally scheduled. Unprecedented engineering problems involved in laying foundations against the swift tides that rush through the channel caused the delay. The new bridge, an integral part in the long-proposed Canada to Mexico coast highway, has the longest single clear span ever planned. It is three times the length of Brooklyn bridge across the East river at New York, and 700 feet longer that the present titleholder, the George Washington bridge across the Hudson at New York. With two side spans, the bridge has a total length of 6,450 feet. iUeel in the towers alone is more than that in the entire Quebec bridge across the St. Lawrence, itself one of the world's largest. The towers rise 746 feet above mean high tide, while, ships have a minimum clearance of 220 feet, 100 more than the Brooklyn bridge's clearance. Despite this height, masts of tho cruise ship Empress of Britain will have to be trimmed down slightly in order to obtain ample clearance on its annual visit here. .*> Negro Killed By Lightning A negro man about 24 yqars of age was instantly killed by lightning, last Thursday night, on the place of A. K. Weldon, on the outskirts of town. The man had only a very short time left the house of Mr. Weldon. He had gone back home and went to the door during the hail storm in which there was much lightning and thunder. The man was hit and fell backwards and was found without a single mark on the body and with his hands in his pockets. A negro woman who was visiting in the house was shocked. The wife and several children survive. . ' T ' * - ?I Negro Is Freed By "Nine Old Men" Washington, April ,26.?The supreme court declared unconstitutional today an 1871 Georgia law prohibiting insurrection against the Btate, under which Angelo Herndon, Cincinnati negro communist organizer, was sentenced to an 18 to 20 year penitentiary term. Justice Roberts delivered the 5 to i 4 decision holding that the law "vioI lates the guarantees of liberty embodied In the 14th amendment." * I Justice Van Devanter delivered a .'dissenting opinion in which Justices McReynolds, Sutherland and Butler joined. - The decision reversed a ruling hy the Georgia supreme court upholding the statute ^hlch was passed during reconstruction days. The state said communist literature found in Herndon's possession advocated, among other things, establishment of a "black belt republic'" In the South after seizure of all land belonging to white people. Herndon contended there was no evidence he had advocated "violence or other unlawful acts" and that the statute violated his right of free speech, free press and free assembly. He was convicted in 1932 but has been at liberty under $7,000 bail provided by tho International Labor Defense. Once before he appealed to the supreme court, but it held it had no Jurisdiction at that time.
