Anthony Toomer Porter, minister,
educator, soldier, priest, was born In
1828 When twenty-six years old he
assumed charge of a tiny mission
which hud been in existence tor six
jears hut whjch was not yet beyond
the beginning stage. With the brilliant
energy that characterized the
man, he set to work to develop bis
charge; within a few years it took a
leading place in the diocese, a position
which it holds td this day.
Immediately following the War Between
the States, In which he participated
as a chaplain in the Confederate
Army, Dr. Porter returned to
Charleston, to find his congregation
scattered and the church in debt. But
within seven years the church building
had been enlarged and beautified,
all pews had been occupied again,
and the parish was In a healthy state.
A great challenge to Dr. porter was
the pathetic lack of educational facilities
in South Carolina Just after the
war. To help In correcting that. In
1867 he opened the Holy Comtuuuion
Church Institute for the education of
young men, particularly the sous of
Confederate veterans. In the years
that followed, he educated thousands
of young men, many of them at no
coat to their parents, in his absence
during the eighty's, the board of true*
tees renamed the school the Porter
Military Academy, which has continued
through the years an Important
school for young men.
* The committee arranging for the
service is headed by General Charles
P. Sumjperall, president of The Citadel,
who was the war-time commander
I of the Immortal First Division and the
Fifth Ariny Corps of brilliant achieiement,
and later Chief of Staff of the
United States Army. General Summerall
graduated at the Porter Military
Academy before going to West
| Point. Among others on the committee.are:
Major Generals Frank Parker
and Campbtni King, W. J. Warrington,
of New Oileans, and Theron L.
Gregory, of Kershaw.
All reachable former members of
Dr. Porter's congregation have been
invited. Special seats will be reserved
in the church for Porter alumni;
they will be escorted to their
sejits by present Porter cadets, who
will place them in the section of the
church occupied by the "old boys"
during school yearsi

Congress has voted to accept the
Andrew W. Mellon $60,000,000 gallery
of art offer. The only proviso made
by Mr. Mellon to the gift, was that he
is to have the naming of five of the
nine directors in charge of the art
gallery. *
Clarence Addison Dykstra, city
manager of Clnclnnatti, O., has been
chosen as the president of the University
of Wisconsin, at a salary of
$15,000 a year. He succeeds Glenn
Frank, who was ousted from the position
two months ago because he
was crosswise with the political powers
of Wisconsin. 4
The California senate rejected a bill
passed by the house, which wohld
have granted a legislative pardon to
Tom Moonoy, serving a life sentence
for participation In the 1916 "Preparedness
Day" bombings In San Francisco.

John J! Healy, chief of the ietectives
of Charleston, was killed, ten
miles from Columbia, when his automobile
collided with a truck which
slewed over'as his car was passing it.
He was on his way to federal court
at Columbia, to appear as a witness.
He was one of the best known officers
of this state. *A detective driving his
car was slightly injured.
Twelve persons, including two women,
were killed when attacked by
farmers In the village of San Pedro,
Toluca, Mexico. The dead were attached
to a government surveying
party. '
