Title VIII of the Social Security
Act, which became effective January
1, 193/$, imposes an exclae tax of one
per cent upon the wages paid by, ev
*?-.y employe* to his employees (regard
! ? of the number) for services
rendered. It also imposes an Income
tax of one per cent upon the wagea
received by each individual from bla
employer aa remuneration for aer
vicea renederd, which must be withheld
by the employer when wages are
paid, and the en^ployer la liable for
the amount of auch tax whether or
not it ia ao withheld.
Compensation paid the following
groups of employees is exempt from
tho taxes: agricultural labor; domes
tic service; casual labor not in the
course of your employer's trade or
busineaa; employees who have attained
the age of 65 years; officers and
members of crews of vessels; Government,
employees (Federal, State and
Municipal,) and services performed
by employees of religious, chariatble,
Hcientiftc, literary and educational organizations
and community chests.
The returns (Forms SS-1) raust^e
rendered in quadruplicate for each
calendar month and are required to
bo filed with the Collector of Internal
Revenue, Columbia, S. C., on or before
the last day of the month next
succeeding that for which the return
is made. Fdr instance, the return for
the month of January, 1937, is required
to be filed on or before the
last day of February, 1937, etc.
The provisions of Title VIII of the
Social Security Act are entirely separate
and distinct from the provisions
of Title IX.
A deputy collector will be stationed
at Camden, S. C., on February 2, 1987,
at the court house from 9 a. m. to 6
p. m., for the purpose of giving information
concerning the Social Security
Act and assisting taxpayers in preparing
returns required by the act.
All employers are invited to contact
the deputy collector if in need of assistance
or Information.
