this afternoon when he was caught
anil crushed between the trailer of a
car and a wall. Several ribs were
broken and he was bruised and injured
internally.
He was taken to the Hartsville
Emergency hospital.
Hopes for his recovery are entertained
although he is considered to
be in a serious condition.

M. 10. Crawford, owner of the uutotnobile
tin- governor was driving at
the time, tiled a companion suit for
$1,500 for damages to his car.
Copies of the complaint were servod
on. State Highway officials under
a South Carolina law outlining the
procedure for suing non-residents for
taftic accidents. ,
| 1 he governor alleged that he "suffered
extreme pain and torture" frcin
the accident, "was unable to attend
to any duties as governor of South
Carolina and was forced to cancel
numerous speaking engagements over
the state, and that lie had to pay,
hospital and medical thills.
1 lie plaintiff received very severe
and painful injuries to his neck and
other painful injuries and bruises to
his body, and his whole body and
nervous system was severely shocked,"
the complaint continued. It alleged
that the governor was driving
carefully and that the other car caused
the accident by going "at a fast,
reckless, unlawful and excessive rate
of speed."
Mrs. Marie I mope was driving the
car from Pennsylvania to Florida at
the time of the accident. The governor
was on his way in a borrowed
car to visit his wife and newborn
son at the Columbia hospital.
Large Crowd
To Attend Game
Greenville, S. C., Oct. 26.?Furman
University officials are making preparations
for one of the largest crowds
in the athletic history of the school
to attend the Hurricane-University of
I South Carolina Gamecock dedication
game to be played in Greenville's new
$90,000 Sirrine stadium, November 14.
I Approximately 15,000 people, many
of them Furman alumni returning for
Home-Coming day, are expected to be
in the stands for the kickoff. A mammouth
parade, an alumni banquet and
! a buffett luncheon for honorary guests
will precede the dedication' exercises
which begin at 1:30 o'clock.
Forest Fletcher, president of the
Southern conference and head of the
physical education department of
| Washington and Lee university, will
make the dedicatory address with Dr.
B. E. Geer, president of Furman, accepting
the stadium for the university.
Tickets to the game went on sale
in Greenville the 19th and are going
with rapid pace. The ducats have
been printed in a three color design
on six by three cardboard to act as
souvenirs of the occasion. The curds
may be obtained from J. Ed Itouse,
assistant graduate manager of athletics,
at Furman university.
Senator James Cousens of Michigan,
(lied in a Detroit hospital Monday
afternoon following an illness
with uremic poison, aged 64 years.
He was an Independent Republican
and in many instances supported the
policies of President Roosevelt. He
was also the wealthiest member of
the senate, his fortune of more than
I $30,000,000, being the result of his
early investment in the stock of the
Ford Motor company. He sold out to
the Ford interests some years ago
and afterwards was elected to the
United States senate. He was defeated
for renomlnation in the Michigan
primaries a few weeks ago.
A committee met in Washington
Monday, to discuss proposals for the
restoration of St. Augustine. Fla., as
it looked three centuries ago.

1936, said day being Tuesday following
the first Monday, as proscribed
by the State Constitution.
The qualifications for suffrage are
as follows:
Hohtatonce in State for two years,
in tho County one year, In the polling
precinct in which tho elector offers
to vote, four months, and the payment
thirty days before any election of uuy
poll tux then duo and payable. Provided,
that ministers in charge of an
organized church and teachers of pub-!
lie schools shall be entitled to vote
after six months' residence in the
Stute, otherwise quulitled.

the polls Managers and Clerks must
take und subscribe to the Constitutional
oath. The Chairman of tiie
Hoard of Managers can administer
the outli to tho other Managers and
to tho Clerk; a Notary Public must
administer the oath to Chairman. The
Managers elect their Chairman, and
Clerk.
Polls at each voting pluee must be
opened at 8 o'clock u. m. and closed
at 4 o'clock p. m., except in tho City
of Charleston, where they shall ho
opened at 7 a. m. and closed at 6
p. m. and in the City of Columbia
where the closing hours shall be at
6 o'clock p. m.
Tho Managers have tho power to
fill a vacancy; and If none of the
Managers attend, tho citizens can appoint,
from among tlie qualified voters,
the Managers, who, after being
sworn, can conduct tho election.
At the close of the election the
Managers und Clerks must proceed
publicly to open the ballot box and
count the ballots therein, and continue
without adjournment until tho
same is completed, and make a statement
of tho results for each office,
and sign the same. Within three days
thereafter the Chairman of the Board,
or some one designated by the Board,
must deliver to the Commissioners of
Election the poll list, the box containing
the ballots and written statements
of the results of the election.
