out In this neck of tho national
woodH. (Outside of tho great forest
preserves of sequoia and redwood
trees, there are very few woods along
the route we traveled from the Mississippi
river to thin place, and there
are none hereabouth. There 1h tall

From Las Vegas, the wide-open
legally sanctioned gambling Mecca of

voices of faro dealers are familiar

famous San Jacquin Valley, via Hokersfield,

about 10 n. m., It was not. We
plaintively mentioned the fact to tho
young chap at the service station at
which we stopped, hut he scoffed at
the suggestion, and Just to prove it
wasn't hot he stepped over to th<

the street, Inspected the thermometer,
and returned triumphantly to report
that the temperature was only 10G in
the shade. For the past week, ho
said, the temperature had ranged
from 11G to 120 degrees, Fahrenheit.
So we pepped up and thanked the
weather gods for a cool day.
After that we worried on up to the
base of Mono Rock, in the Sequoia
National Forest, 4,(?00 feet above sealevel,

young <'alifornian, who gave us what

This morning a servicu station man
(native of IIIIiioIh), from whom I
bought an Inner tube, gave another
explanation of California'* more than
five million population. He bus been
out here nine years?lured originally
by the tales of the Paul HunyuiiH of
the Pacific, and infatuated tourists
who banked for a few daya in tho
glamorouH atmosphere of Jfoverly
If Ilia, Hollywood and Malibu Reach,

One of the amusing ? but calculated
- Ideas that we have encountered 1h
that tho South Is hot as Sahara In
the summer. In the San Joaquin valley
in August, with the temperature
above ly.j degrees in iho shade, wo
stopped to buy some tomatoes from
an old woman at a roadside stand.
.Learning that we were from Florida
she asked If it wasn't "turrlble hot"

kersfield just last Wednesday, the
mercury at 3 p. in. stood at 105 in
the shade, and wo were asked the I
same question about "Floridy." And
yesterday, away up in Sacramento,
the maximum was 102.

temperature in St. Petersburg,
and thereabouts, when I casually mention.
In this arid, waterless land, that

am regarded in such a way that J
am mad to realize that my auditors
write me down for an amazing liar.

this reminder has come a fuller appi
ec iation of tho value of our own
Southern forests that are still standing.
