Million Dollars
For Farm Lands
Montgomery, Ala., March 9.?The
federal government had committed
itself to payment of more than one
million dollars for South Carolina
farm land this week in the purchase
program of the Resettlement Administration
for land utilization work, Robert
\V. Hudgens, regional director, announced
today. .
Six hundred sixty-three 'individual
offers of landowners covering about
14:1,000 acres to be developed in three
agricultural and two park projects
had been accepted at Washington.
The amount to be paid for this land
is approximately $1,025,000.
All this land was offered for salo
voluntarily by the owners, Mr. Hudgens
said, with the understanding that
residents of the area would be aided
b> the Resettlement Administration
in securing new and more productive
farms near their present homes. Most
of this land now is unprofitable because
of soil erosion and forest depletion.
Development planned by the Land
1'iilization Division of the RA contemplates
rebuilding the soil through
erosion control, reforestation, and
turning the land to uses that will result
in rebuilding fertility and eventually
bringing it back to profitable
operation.
The projects and approximate acreage
involved in orders accepted are:
Clemson College project, 23,000;
Sand Hills project, 80,000; Poinsett
Forest project, 25,000; Cheraw Recreational
project, 5,200; Kings Mountain
Recreational project, 10,000;

Germany Scraps
Locarno Treaty
Berlin, Mai 7 Adolf Hitler. Hum

btuf ihui Hit* l/ocarno pact was dead,
went German trooptf goosestepplng into
the deinilitai ize<l KhiiiuUuui toduy and
pronounced the tight for Germany*
freedom finished
In swift, bold stunning thrusts, the
Keithfuerhror offered Europe a new
western demilitarized frontier on a
roopenttive basis, declared he was
reudy to sign a new nun aggression
treaty and air pact with his western
neighiM>rs and expressed willingness
If these things transpire?to return
to the League of Nutions.
1 hen he dissolved iiis standing,
shouting licit lining and called a plebiscite
for March 29 to prove to the
world that the German people are hehind
him. In these general elections
Hitler and his followers expect to get
a 'th'ajoritj even greater than their
previous 9<? per cent.
Exhorting the iieiehstu'g in classic
Nazi style lJer Fuehrer pleaded his
iri' iidblnp lor France detailed what
lie sajd were his constant efforts to a
reapproachnii'iM with that country and
castigated the new Franco-Jiussian
mutual assistance pact as one which
might lead to "unpredictable consequences"
for Europe.
This pact, he shouted, with its danger
to Europe of Bolshevik "chaos,"
freed Germany from Locarno.
To begin his day of extraordinary
action, Hitler told foreign diplomats
of his intention to occupy the Rhineland'in
violation of both the Locarno
pact and the Versailles treaty.
From the chancellery, where ho
communicated his intentions to representatives
of lx)carno signatories and
other umbassadors Der Fuehrer went
before the Reichstag at noon.
Standing on the rostrum of the
Kroll Opernahaus, at the very moment
when some 2,000 German troops
crossed the Rhine and goosestepped
infco Cologne, Hitler cried:
In this historic hour, when in
western provinces our Reich German
troops are moving into their future
garrisons of peace, we all united in
two holy confessions.
"First in a solemn oath to recede
bi'iore no power and no force in reestablishing
the honor of our people
and to succumb honorably to tin* heaviest
privation, rather than ever capitulate
before it.
"Hecoifd, in a determination now,
more than ever, to help bring about
understanding among peoples of Europe,
especially among our western
peoples and neighbors.
1 bus, alter three years, 1 believe I
can consider with today the light for
German equality as concluded!"
Before that, Hitler had told the
foreign envoys that the Rhineland reoccupation
by several batallions of
the Reichswehr -regular army?would
be as unostentatious as possible, a
symbol that Germany at least is free
of her bonds of "humiliation."
But with brass band music and anti-aircraft
guns, the first detachment
marched into Cologne, through narnow
stfeets aflame with waving swastika
flags and before a wildly cheering
populace.
The soldiers had waited for orders
at the border of the demilitarized
zone. In the early morning they moved
swiftly into the district.
Their first military parade begar. at
3 p. m., on the square adjacent to the
Cologne Cathedral.
One Shot Kills Three
Huge Rattlesnakes
Thomasville, Ga., March 3.?J. R.
Chastain, Thomas county farmer, living
eight miles from the city on the
Cairo road, has set what Is called a
new record for killing grown-up rattlesnakes.
With one shot from his
trusty shotgun Friday of the past
week, he killed three big rattlers. The
snakes wore in a hole where they
had been hibernating.
He saw the head of one of them
protruding slightly above the hole. He
shot straight down into the hole and
then to his surprise, found he had
killed three Instead of one.
The largest snake had 11 rattles,
the next nine and the smallest of the
trio had seven. He exhibited the
snakes at Thomasville.
A short time ago he killed a rattlosnake
near the same spot, one with
16 rattles?probably the grand-daddy
of the bunch.
