C., Oct. 2.?When all is said and done, the real meeting place of South Carolinians each year is the State Fair, where old friends are seen again and new acquaintances made. This was one of the real reasons behind the formation, more than half a century,ago, of the South Carolina Agricultural and Mechanical society, and throughout the years It has fulfilled this purpose?of joining people of this state in better accord for advancement socially, and commercially. This year the fair is to he held October 21 2t>. which means that it Is just around the corner. The fair lias been improved to meet tiie increased interest. The buildings, t i f . I which frankly needed paint, have got that paint, and now are fresh and attractive. The grounds are in excellent condition. Renovating has been done, and everything put in apple-pie order for the gala week. lint physical improvement has not been all. The biggest improvement is in the fair itself, which will unquestionably have the finest exhibits and the finest sports and the finest entertainment features it has ever been privileged to offer to the poople of South Carolina. That sounds like a strong statement, but Paul V. Moore, the secretary, long experienced in the amusement Held and who knows his fairs, is willing to stake his reputation as a fair judge on that prediction. He knows. He has the line-up before him and ho Is willing to give his personal guarantee that all who conn* will go away having had the best time ihe\ e\er had at a fair. Which, in view ot the goood times of previous >eais, is also saying a lot. It is certain that there will be more and finer exhibits this year of every charac ter than we have ever bad before, and Mr. Nettles and the fair management generally are most grateful for the fine spirit of Cooperation shown by all of the different organizations and the people over the county. There have already been a large number of., applications for booths made. Mr. Grenade, the exhibit chairman, says that he is going to lie able to take care of all individuals and organizations having exhibits. He tisks, though, that arrangements be made just as quickly as possible. . Mr. Nettles lias asked us to say that lx* will welcome any suggestions thai any of the citizens of the county might have to make looking to the greater success of the lair. On hist Friday evening a dinner for the members of the fair committee l'rom all over the county was given at tlx* Camden Hotel, at which | lime-chairman \V. F. Nettles and lair secretary Murdoch M. Johnson gave an outline of the work that had been accomplished and thanked the fair committee and citizens generally for their cooperation. In spite of the inclement weather, the meeting was I largely attended and much enthusi5 asm was shown. A large number of those present were called on for remarks un ft everyone present pledged his or iter wholehearted support. It was a line meeting and lite fair nuinag* incut was much gratified for its success. Camden is solidly behind the fair and, with tlx* citizens of Camden and the county cooperating together us they are now, there is no reason but that this county, the best county in the state, should not have the best fair. The complete fair program appears in another part of this week's Chronicle for the information of its readers. Southern Offices in N. W. Building The Southern Railway freight headquarters were moved this week to the freight station formerly occupied by the Northwestern railway of South Carolina. This was made necessary by the increased freight business occasioned mostly by the abandonment of the Northwestern entering, this city. It has also been necessary for tlx* Southern to put on an additional1 i freight crew in order to handle the I inc reased freight in and out of Cainden. The Southern is said to he hauling more cot-ton out <>t Canal n thann't any time ditrtriK the past several j > ears. This additional freight train is said to he temporary, hut if the increased business warrants, it will ! he made permanent. It now uives a m ight one wa> eac h day out of Camden. The hulk of the cotton shipment is said to be going to mills north of < anxlen and tlx* Charleston p-'rt tor export. While the offices have been moved to the freight station, the road will continue to use* the passenger station during train hours and also for headquarters for the Southeastern express Compapy operating e ver its lines. The increase in business has necessitated additional help and William C. Nic holson, a former Camden man. has been transferred from Orangeburg to Camden to assist 11 I,. Bradford, the agent in charge. Mr. Nicholson has had twenty-one years service with the Southern?having entered tlx* office* here and has served at Heath Springs. Shelby, N c. and Orangeburg. The sale was held at noon in !ho office of J. Team (iettys, attorney for the' school board. The interest rate is 5 per cent and the amount sold was $8,000, or 10 bonds of $.'?oo value each. They will mature serially one certificate each year for the years 1030 to 1051 Inclusive. The bonds will be dated September first, 1035. The successful bidder was the Commercial Bank or Camden and their representatives paid a premium of %iViU in purchasing the issue. The second high bidder watt the Kershaw County Kinking Fund and the third highest, bidder was C. W. Haynes Co., of Columbia. Others who submitted bids were: The First National Hank of Camden, 11, S. Dixon Company of Charlotte, and 0. H. Crawford, gf Columbia. j/* Houser Suggested For City 'Council ICditor The Chronicle: We do not know whether or not it is the pur-; pose of the City Council to order an election to iill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Councilman T. V. Walsh, Jr., but we feel that the Fifth Ward is entitled to representation on the town's governing board, and wo hope that a special election to iill this vacancy will be ordered at tills time. We suggest to (111 the vacancy Mr. D. O. Housor, who lias heretofore rendered excellent service as a member of the City Council and whoso ability and interest in our public affairs is well known. We feel that he will servo the ward faithfully and efficiently, and we trust that he may be named to till out the unexpired term of Mr. Walsh, whose resignation we all so much regret.?Friends. ADVERTISING (Continued From First Puge) of advertising agencies who are to tour the Carollnas iu October. These men and women represent a travel business of $100,000,000 yearly, and this particular toijr o| the Carollnas is sponsored by the Carolina Motor Club and the Carollnas, Inc. A luncheon will be given the visitors at the Sursileld Golf Club when they visit Camden, Florida, Cuba, Canada, and the Pacific Coast is already benefiting from the advertising clubs, and the above organizations hope to sell them in the Carollnas. They will visit Greensboro, Charlotte, Plowing Hock, Linville, Asheville, Highlands, Greenville, Spartanburg, Aiken, Columbia, Camden^ Sumter, Charleston, Georgetown, Myrtle Beach, Pinehurst, Southern Pines and other points. The Chamber has requested the city to change the present parking laws on Main stret, especially on Saturdays, when many people park their cars all day in the business section, thereby depriving shoppers of the chance to do their shopping without parking a long distance from the business section. A Joint dinner of the Rotary Club, exchange Club and Chamber of Commerce wdll be given at the Hotel Camden on the night of October 8, at' which time a program of worthwhile things for the town and county will I be launched and a large-gathering is ! expected to be on hand, i W. P. Heath, Jr., has been very J active in working for a swimming pool | for Camden, to be erected with | \V. I\ A. funds. The proposed' location of the new swimming pool is '.near Dicey's Ford, and an abundance of clear, clean, cool water will be had twenty-four hours a day.
