Dollard, j>opuIar Sumter county rural policeman, wa? painfully injured early tihis morning when he leaix*l through a window at his home in his sleep. Mr, Dollard had retired for the night at his home on the Manning Yoad when the accident occurred. ile 'was taken to the Tuomey Hospital for treatment and was getting along as well as could be ex |>oc?t ed. The officer worked late last night on a case with City Officer J. 1), Chandler and reached his home shortly after 11 o'clock. He was tired and hungry and ate heartily ami went to bed immediately after supper. The next Lhijijg he knew, Mr. Dollard said, he was in the yard of his home badly hurt. Ho had leaped through the glass window of his bedroom to the ground about six feet below, the house being a one-story structure. When he came to 'his senses Mr. Dollard called to his wife and she summoned assistance. The accident occurred shortly before 1:30 o'clock, it was stated. An examination at the hospital rewaled no broken bones, but the muscles in both legs were badly torn and there weie numerous cuts and bruises on his legs and arms. lie remained in the hospital today for treatment. The only reason that could bo ascribed for the accident was that Mr. Dollard leaped from the window while in the grip of a violent nightmare.? .Saturday's Sumter Item. Balloon Swallowing Columbia. S. ('., April 30.-?If sword swallowing is not to your taste, why no* give balloon swallowing a try? A successful exhibition of this art was given by Dr. John van de Erve of the Medical College of South Carolina before the biology section of 'the South Carolina Academy of Science at its recent meeting at the University of South Carolina. The demonstration accompanied a lecture on the "Hunger Movements of the Stomach." Doctor van de Erve swallowed a balloon attached to the end of a very small tube. It was inflated in his stomach so that it pressed closely against the walls of that organ. The conclusive hunger contractions or "pangs" of the stomach muscles compressed the air in the balloon which caused a rise and fall of a column of water in a test tube to which the tiny hose was attached. Thus was illustrated clearly the involuntary and spasmodic 'movements of tne stomach muscles when the individual experiences hunger.
