Multiple Births
Not Uncommon
i ? y- ? ?
Birth of quintuplet*, like those of
the Dionne family of Corbeil, Ontario,
occur once in 41,500,000 births. As
there are a few more than 2,000,000
births in this country every year this
would mean an occurrence of this
kind once every 20 years.
The birth of quadruplets occurs once
in 747,000 instances, of triplets once
j in 7,103, and of twins once in 800
times. Of course, these are estimates,
especially in the case of the
first three named, being 'based on calculation
rather than actual observation.
The Hast recorded birth of quintuplets
in this country occurred in 1903,
but not all of these infants survived.
In fact, I)r. Logan Clendening of the
[ Kansas university medical school
knows of no case of quintuplets who
have survived as long as 24 hours.
Most such births are still-born and
premature. The Dionne babies were
born (prematurely, but all are still alive
and have a good chance to survive.
But the birth of the five Dionne mI
fants is not a record for America. On
September 26, 1872, Mrs. Timothy
Bradley of Trumbull county, Ohio,
became the mother of eight children
as reported in a Boston medical joui<
nal, all of whom along with the
mother, survived. Mrs. Bradley had
previously given birth 'to twins twice
bearing 12 children within six years.
Multiple births were a habit in her
family as her grandmother had five
sets of twins, her father and mother
both were of twin births and Mrs.
Bradley herself was a member of
triplets. *
Two cases of sextets born in America
are known to medical science?
one in Maine in 1847, but only two of
the infants lived. In 1888 six babies
were born in Dallas, Texas, to Mrs.
George Ilirsh, two girls and four boys
and all of them survived.
Mirth* of quadruplet* have been
quite frequent, but the only set known
to have grown to maturity in this
country are the Keys girls, aged 19,
of Hollis, Okla. A quartet born to Mr.
and Mrs. L K. Wycoflf, iSac City,
Iowa, recently still survive.
While the birth of an octet to Mrs.
Bradley of Ohio holds the record in
America several multiple births greater
in number are said to be recorded
in European medical annals but are
not known to have been authenticated.
Luckily for Ernest Dionne his quintet
of girls was hot born in some
large city where obstetricians often
charge from $600 to $1,000 for single
births. The fee charged by Dr. A. R.
I>afoe, family v<; physician of the
Dionnes, iss$$. -dtt will (be $16 for officiating
at the birth of the Dionne
quintet, the doctor has stated.
Another strange fact reported, at
the time of the stork's visit to the I
Dionne home was a telephone call to1
the local newspaper by a brother of
Ernest Dionne. ' The somewhat excited
young man asked the editor
what^. it would cost to print a news
item about his sister-in-law giving
birth to five babies. He didn't know
at the time that he was giving one
of the year's ibiggest news stories
to the world.

Control of Typhoid Fever
Typhoid fever is a preventable disease
that can and should be stamped
out. There were twenty-four cases
in Kershaw county during the year
of 1033 with seven deaths, which is
a very heavy toll of life.
How to prevent typhoid fever is
not such a difficult matter:
First?Be sure that you use water
and milk from clean sources and food
that is protected from flies.
Second?Be vaccinated against typhoid
fever as often as your physi
cian advises.
Third?-Waste matter from ? P(r
son having typhoid fever should bt
mixed immediately with chlorinated
lime or carbolic acid, and the aasu
from any person who has had typhoid
fever should be buried or deposit^
in a sanitary privy according to the
instructions of the Board of Health
Certain persons who have had ty!
phoid fever and recovered continue to
carry the infectious germs in their
digestive tract without having ftny
symptoms of the disease and ar?
known as "carriers." If they are not
careful in their toilet they may cau*
many cases of typhoid fever etch
year through the handling of food?
with unwashed hands. Or they m?y
contaminate the water supply of the
spring or open well and unknowingly
be the cause of the disease. ' in
breeding places of flies should he destroyed
and all homes should be
screened against them.
Let every one do his or her part
in suppressing the disease, thereby
adding much to the health and happi.
ness of our people.
