"Sunny Jim" Kolph, whose personal characteristics and long public e*r"ilf had made him known on two continents, died as his son, James Kolph, 3rd, hold his hand. Mrs. Kolph and the governor's throe (brothers, Will, Konald and Tom, were at the (bedside. The duties of governor immediately fell upon Lieutenant Governor Frank F. Murriam, of. Long (Beach, like Kolph a Kopublican. Merriam, a .former Iowa stat elegislator, is 07, a native of Bopkinton, Iowa. He had announced previously for the Kepublcan nomination for governor, ltolph's capacity for making friends, his acts and gestures of generosity and his enormous capacity for work had mudo him one of the outstanding political figures of the country. He held decorations from France, Japan and other countries. The Kolph smile was famous. He never appeared in public without a gardenia in his buttonhole. He was ever ready to crown a beauty queen, { throw the first ball at the opening game of the season's national pastime, make a speech, meet an incoming dignitary or a visiting actor. The governor died in a coma into which he had lapsed some three hours previously. His last gesture rame. during thb morning when he opened his eyes and smiled faintly, indicating recognition of his son.
