which the American Legion Auxiliary
offers on "Poppy lhiy, to he worn in
honor of the World war dead is reserved
strictly for the war disabled,"
Mrs. SchlQsburg explained. "It offers
a means of employment to veterans
unable to do other work and
Pot only brings them money for the
support of themselves and families,
but aids in their rehabilitation by
giving them beneficial interesting
work.
"The poppies are made in government
hospitals and in special poppy
workrooms maintained by the Auxiliary.
This year 58 different poppy
making centers have been in operation
in 10 states. Lmployment is restricted
to men unable to do work
of other types and preference is given
those with families to support. The
paper poppy is used exclusively by
the Auxiliary because its making is
a hand rather than machine procesa.
"The best of working conditions
are, of course, provided for the disabled
men employed in the poppy
project. The number of poppies that
a man can make in one day is restricted
in order that the workers
will not tax their strength. The
work is directed in such a manner
that it will aid in the physical and
mental rehabilitation of the veterans,
hs well as giving thorn financial benefit.*.

mail truck robbery last November.
The jury in fe<leral district court
returned its verdict after hut 25 minutes
of deliberation, and Judge E.
Yates Webb passed sentence immediately.
Hanghart's sentence is to run concurrently
with a 00-ycar term he is
serving in .Illinois for the John
(Jake the Barber) Factor kidnaping.
Schmidt is to be sent to a federal
prison to be selected by the attorney
general.
Judge Webb, in passing sentence
described the men as desperate criminals,
murderers at heart, and expressed
disappointment that !#ws did
riot permit <k>-aih sentences hi such
cases. He said such crimes as had
been attributed to the two throughout
the country must be stopped, and
that they would be made capital offenses
by the states if some other
mode of deterrence is not found.

William F. Geltle, a wealthy California
oil man, was kidnaped from
his estate near Los Angeles yesterday
by two men who drove off with
him. He was entertaining ten men
at his home and when they all went
to the house from a swimming pool,
he and one guest stopped at a summer
house on the grounds to put on
their shirts and trousers. Thus they
were held up by two men with pistols.
The other man was gagged and bound
to a tree, and Gettle was taken across
the large grounds, put over an eightfoot
wall, and carried off in an automobile,
before his wife and guests began
to look for him.
Norman Moore, kennel owner near
Mebane, N. C., shot an eagle having
a \Ving spread of seven and a half
feet and weighing 20 pounds, as the
big bird was trying to carry a setter
puppy away from the kennel. The
puppy was saved.
