Jake Wanted "Jack"
To Boost the NBA
R, S, Houd. Sumter insurance and
fraternal order man, often had a negro
called Jake to do all his masonry
ami recently when two fireplaces in
his home needed attention he called
on Jake to look over the situation
and give him an estimate on the cost
of the job. So Jake came and examined
the two chimneys and then
went to see Mr. Hood.
Mr. Hood knew Jake of old and
suggested they settle on a price bofore
they went any further with the
matter. "You know the last time
you charged mo $11.50 for that saame
job," he told the would-be contractor.
"Yes, sir, Mr. Hood, that's right,
but you know this NBA is in now,
and I got to charge you just a little
bit more."
"Well, .jhatAs all right, but how
much iriorer" Mr. Hood wanted to
know.
"Well, that job will cost you $7.50
sir."
Mr.. Hood considered the matter
and took Jake with him down the
stvept. "Now Jake," he. ordered,
"you just stand right here until 1
's
oomo hack and then I will lot you
know about the job," and Mr. llood
went on about his business,
j The next day another bricklayer
i canm to Mr. Hood and told him he
: heany he had a job he wanted done
and he was the very man to do the
work.
Mr. Hood took him up to look over,
the situation and get an estimate on
the job.
"Mr. Hood, I'll give you a nice job
on them chimneys for $0.00," the
contractor told him.
Mr. Hood took him down street to
a big tree, the same place he had left
Jake the day before. v
The next day a third bricklayer
came in. He too had heard that Mr.
Hood wanted some work done and
was anxious to get the job, Mr. Hood
at once took him to the house to look
over the situation. -The negro went
! over the chimneys very carefully.
"Mr. Hood, I'll do that job for'
you, to your satisfaction, for $4,"
"The price-is all right," Mr. Hood
| assured him, "but before we settle
on it I want to know that you can
; give me a good job. I have never
I seen you before and I do^tt, know
I anything about you. Who can you
give as references?"
i The negro stuttered and stammer
cm! and finally gave several names
Mr. Hood did not know, But tell me
somebody you worked for that I
know so I can call them up and see
if ypu gave satisfactory work," Mr.
Hood urged, seeing the negro's embarrassment.
"What's the matter
you can't tell mo somebody you have
worked for?" jy"Mr.
Hood, I might as wtm tell you
the truth. Jake done sent me to you
to get dis job. Hen, you see, I gets
de job and Jake, he does do work."?

I We extend to Our Customers and Friends j
Heartiest New Year Greetings!
I Having- passed through the troubled year of 1933, without '
j embarrassment or interruption of Business, we naturally feel j j
that our Customers have implicit Confidence in our Bank, know- j
ing that we always keep in liquid condition, therefore they are j
indifferent about the Insurance feature, so far as we are Con,

security, and for their information we append copy of Insurance | j
