Thomas Washington Coward, who passed his last birthday February 13, the oldest living Mason in South Carolina, perhaps in the country, died at 5:46 this morning at his home in the Mifibrook section, near Aiken. With his death there ended a long and colorful career. His mother was Andrew Jackson's firs| cousin and he was born when Jacksbn was at his hcighth! Ho was a charter momber of the Aiken Masonic lodge and he will bo buried with Masonic honors. He was a conductor on the old South Carolina railroad and ran on this tiain during the Confederate war, being called back to this work after staving elsewhere for tho Confederacy for a short time. When the Southern railway reproduced the first train and took it on exhibition a few years ago, Captain Coward waq called on to < meet it and ride it into Aiken. He quit railroading after the war and J farmed. An incident in his service with the old South Carolirfa road between Charleston and Hamburg was that when Kilpatrick and Wheeler staged their fig^ at Aiken he backed his train out qt the way, thus saving it for further use of the Confederacy. He was widely known and widely liked and with his passing Aiken's venerable link with the past has gone. The General Electric company has announced a 5 per cent wage increase for its 50,000 employes over the country, effective last Week. Pullets Need Range And Proper Ration Clemson College, June 24.?Advising that a separate range be provided for the pullets to avoid having them contract diseases from the laying hens when they range 'together, P. H. Gooding, extension poultryman states that these infections are usually in the soil previously used (by old hens, and are easily contracted by pullets. When the pullets no longer require heat they should be moved to ground where no poultry has' been ranging during the p?st year, Mr. Gooding advises. This location should be fa? enough away from the laying house so that the pullets will not range on the same ground used by the adult birds. If only a limited amount of land is avaolable, a fence can be constructed to keep the birds separated. The kind of feed given to pullets during the growing period will be an important factor in their development and ability to produce a profit able number of winter eggs.
