From chiidho ti's early days', and
out of the fur recesses of memory,
comes the picture of a little improvised
school room at the. head of a
lony flight of stairs. This school
room was fitted up with desks and
benches fashioned from jroods boxes
and various odds and ends- the handiwork
of the teacher. These furnishings
served the purpose, for what,
was lacking in modern equipment,
the teach< r made up for it with patience
ami perseverance in trying to
instill the rudiments of learning into
I the filing of her pupils.
A few of the pupils of thie little
school were .possessed of ordinary in-1
telJigence, but -most of them were i
I considered too dumb or?too ineorrigi-1
J bit* to attend the public schools. The

Joint Meeting Is
Enjoyed By All
One "hundred farm women from
lancast?** and Kershaw counties
s|x?nt two very profitable days last
week at the 1-H club camp near Lake
Shamokin. This camp was in charge
of Miss Ann Moss Moore, Home
Agent for Lancaster county and Miss
.Sadie Craig, the Kershaw County
Home Agent. They we>r? assisted by
Miss Harriett? Layton, Asst. State
Agent. and Mrs. Dora Dee Walker,
Conservation and Prohibition Specialist,
from Winthrop College.
The camp opened on Thursday,
morning. At the flrot general assembly
the Rev. A. D. McArn, pastor of
the Presbyterian church, conducted
.the devotional, giving one of the most
(helpful and inspiring talks of the
whole camp. He used as a basis for
his remarks the Bible * quotation,
"And I. if I be lifted up, will dTaw all
men unto me."
Mrs. Kate B. Gettys, President of
the Kershaw County Council of Farm
Women, welcomed the I Lancaster
county women. Mrs. S. J. Fundcrburk,
president of the I*ancaster
Council, responded in a very charming
manner. Then Podlye West, presi-t
dent of the Junior Council, brought'
greetings from t'hat organization. A f-;

.had charge of the kitchen and the

The camp was planned to give the
he.me demonstration club women of
Kershaw and I>ancaster counties twoi
days of rest, relaxation and recreation.
That the plan was successful

women. One heard <>n every side: '
"I've neyer had such a good time;"-,
' I didn't know so much fun and in- <
spiration could be crowded into just \
two days;" another, "This is the first .
camp I've ever attended but it won't
be the last;" still another. "The J
change has done me so much good;
I didnt feel like coming but being
here playing games and listening to
Mother Wailker. I feel like a different ;
person."
Three men were killed at Tampa,

,Mooney Acquitted
In Bomb Murder

Moiuuty today found not guilty
of murdering Arthur Ncfeon, cms of
10 .persons kiHed in a bomb explosion
during a Preparedness day parade
here 17 years ago.
The verdict created the strangest
of all contradictions in a case that
had been filled -with them. Mooney
already is serving a life term for
the murder of George C. lAwlor, lumberman,
whose head was blown off
in the explosion.
Mooney now stands convicted by
one jury of having placed the infernal
machine, and heki guiltless by another
jury.
Neither verdict affects the other.
Mooney tonight was back in his Ban
Quentin penitentiary cell, putting in
another night of a lifetime behinA
the bars.
Mooney did not feel today ft verdict I
was meaningless.
"1 shall apply at once to Governor
Rolph for a pardon," he said.
"Because of the weight of public
opinion that will result from this verdict,
I think 1 must be successful.
"If the evidence' was unworthy to
be presented to a jury on this indictment,
it certainly is insufficient to
keep me in prison for life on an nl- <1
most identical charge.
"Failing that, 1 shall go to the

Lumpkin had been a patient in the j
hospital. lie had been suffering j
from pneumonia and complication i
which brought on a nervous collapse, j
Death was ascribed primarily to pneumonia.
His condition hail been
i ritu al for several days.
Arrangements for the funeral had ,
not been made tonight. The .body .
was taken to Columbia tonight.
.Lumpkin was born in Milledgeviile,
Ga., but had lived in Columbia f
many years. Among the public offices
which he occupied was that of
as?i?tant attorney -general of Sou-th-Carolina
from 1919 to 1923. In the
World War he was captain of a machine
gun company, and his service in
France brought him recognition which
led to his election to head the state
legion.
A number of years he had been engaged
in the practice of law in Columbia.
He was weil known also because
of his work as a member of
the General Assembly. /
He leaves a widow; a son, Morris,
Jr.; and two brothers, Alva and
Bryant, all of Columbia, and three
sisters.

Negro Dies
For Murder of Lady
Raleigh, May 19.?Confessing his
guilt, David McNair, 23-year-old East
Durham negro, today died in the electric
chair at state's prison for the
Armistice day murder of Mrs. J. W.
McCown, Guilford county woman.
McNair confessed to Rev. T. A.
Grady, pastor of the Ebenezer Baptist
church in Durham. Rev. Grady,
with two other Durham negro ministers,
accompanied him to the chair.
Grady is pastor of the church of
which McNair's mother is a member.

guilt to within. 10 minutes h.e
electrocution on "the hopes it would
-av<- me from dying." Prior to his
