More Plants, More
Potash for Potatoes
Florence, Feb. 4.?Closer spacing
and higher percentage of potash in
the fertilizer are indicated for greater
success with sweet potatoes, according
to tests being conducted here at
the Pee Dee Experiment Station in
cooperation with the United States
Pureau of Plant Industry, says K. E.
Hall, superintendent of the station.
"Results from spacing plants six. 1
nine, twclvy, fifteen and eighteen
inches in four foot rows have been
obtained over a period of years," Mr. j
Hal! continues, "and these show that i
best yields have been obtained with
the closer spacings, which have also'
given a larger percentage of number
1
one potatoes. Wide spacing has a
tendency to increase the size, resulting
in a large percentage of Jumbo,
or oversize potatoes.
"Fertilizer at rate of 500 pounds
per acre and vailing in potash from
three to fifteen per cent has been applied
with a view of determining the
effect of potash on yield and size.
Results to date show that there is
an increase in yield from increasing
the proportion of potash up to nine
per cent, but after that point is
passed the yield falls off. Kxtreme-1
!y high proportions of potash have
had a tendency to increase the proportion
of Jumbo, or oversize pota- j
toes."

hou*e, to come out peacefully.
For several minutes, the officers
manned the guns ready to lay siege
while Ford acted as go-between for
Lyle and the four inside the hou-e.
Finally Ford emerged, his aims
full of weapons, with the announcement
the men would surrender. He
was followed by the suspects, who
came out singly with hands upraised.

Chocolate Cream Icing
Melt unsweetened chocolate over
boiling water. Make a white frosting
by cooking together, one and onehalf
cups of sugar and one-half cup
of milk. Cook until it forms soft j
ball in cold water.
Remove from fire and beat until
creamy?add little vanilla. Spread
immediately on cake. Coat this
white frosting with melting choco.

Buy French lamb chops. Buy white
paper frills and small red cardboard
hearts. Paste hearts to the paper
frills. Broil lamb chops. Place frills
on end of each chop.
Then pile small peas in center of
platter. Place same number of pieces

j shape. Place each chop on a heart.
When served this makes a very pretty

4H tablespoons of corn starch.
Little salt.

Method: Heat milk luke warm. 1
Mix corn starch with a little water.
Beat eggs slightly. Mix corn starch
and egg together. Add this slowly to
milk and stir constantly until it
thickens. Add sugar and flavoring.
Mix well and spread between cake
layers. Serve with whipped cream.
Ham Smothered in Sweet Potatoes
? Largo slice ham.
^ cups of sliced, cooked sweet potatoes.
2 tablespoons brown sugar.
1 cup of hot water.
1 tablespoon of melted butter.
Method: -Cut ham in pieces for
serving. Cook slightly on each side.
Cover ham with sweet potatoes. Heat
sugar, water and butter together.
Pour over ham and potatoes. Bakej
one hour.

Method: Clean and prepu
