County Fair Notes
Judge Town send will be holding the
fall term of court during the county
fair and the big Democratic rally.
He has been invited to sit among the
distinguished guests, that day to review
the parade. It is hoped that he
will accept the invitation, for all the
court officials, jurors and others attending
court, will be anxious to see
the parade.
0
The city street forces will put the
fair grounds in good shape (before the
carnival arrives here next week. You
can always count upon the city offi-rials
and Street Commissioner Bill
Whitakar to take an interest in anything
that helps the coifimunity.
A. E. Miller, of the fair committee,
will be in Columbia this week and
will invite many of the (farm machinery
exhibitors to visit our fair next
week. It is thought that many of
them will accept the invitation.
rh
The football fans are requested
not to cross over the wire fence during
the game with 'Sumter. With ifo
many people on the side lines, it_is
confusing to the players and officials.
This section is reserved for the players,
official?, scorers, water boy?, the
team physician, visiting newspaper
reporters, and others who are needed
to make the game a success.
t-The largest crowd to see a football
game in Camden is expected to
^witness the Cumden -<Sumte iT game on
'Friday, the 28th. Of course .Sumter
will bring over a large rooting section.
It has been many years since
iSumter has defeated Camden, but
year their team is clicking in a
lively fashion, and they are counting
on getting the big end of \he score.
However, the champions can be
counted on iriving their usual bril-!
Httt fight, especially where the com.
Petition is to be as keen as the
eoonty fair game..
H. G, Garrison, Jr., has about fifty
"*r$ in sight, who will wear red
jjfirt? in the Democratic rally tparade.
However, as there are many in the
county who have mules and horses
H>at can ride in the parade, who have
been approached, they are retu
got In loucft witK^Mr. Car
rison. All those 'having an old shirt
will turn it in before the parade* to
be dyed a brilliant red at DesChamps
dry cleaning shop. Many of the older
generations will recall the exciting
days of 1876 when nearly every man
in the county donned, a red shirt and
rode into town on mules and horses
to help redeem our state from Republican
and negro mis-rule, which
had dominated South Carolina since
the Civil iwar. " . (
' \
The iSpanish-American war veterans
are requested to get in touch with
Bill Young, who will be in charge of
that 'branch of the parade.
. The members of the American Legion
wilh-report to Bill Alexander at
the Legion Hall. Also all visiting
Legionnaires, and all requested to
bring along their Legion cap.
'
All of the 1876 red shirts in Kershaw
and neighboring counties, are
requested to get in touch writh $. M.
Kennedy, Jr., who will provide cars
for them in the paradie. Mr. Kennedy
would like to get the names of all
red shirts as ear# as possible, so as
to know just how many cars will be
necessary for them.
John deLoaoh and John Villepigue
will have eharge of the Boy Scouts
and all are expected to wear their
scout uniforms that day.
________ . i
Mrs. C. E. Watts is busy arranging
committees to look after the various
women's organizations who will be
represented in the parade, such as the
Daughters of the American Revolution,
United Daughters of the Confederacy
and American Legion Auxiliary.
Mrs. Watts will also have
the big job of looking after the 2,000
school children that will be a part of
the parade.
The Hoover buggies will create as
much interest bringing up the rear
of the .parade as a steam' calliope
does to a circus parade. Instead of
' two cars to every garage, as promised
by the great Republican party,
many farmers feel lucky to have a
Hoover buggy, which everyone knows
is nothing but the rear axle of a Ford
mounted on automobile tires, and a
seat on same. Shafts are attached
and a mule pulls it Instead of a highpowered
motor. For every Hoover
buggy there *yill be a prize of $1.00,
and for the most unique one in th%
parable there will be a special prize
of $5.00.
Chief of Police Hilton is 'expected
to have a number of State Highway
patrolmen to help handle the crowds
on the big day of our fair.
The Legion and iShrine Club have
arrunged for a free act at the county
fair that will thrill the visitors.
They have contracted with KosardVivyana
Company, composed of four
acrobats, who will do high aerial acts
and platform stunts twice daily commencing
on Wednesday. Some of
their acta are death defying and wnl
make chills run up and down your
back. Their platform acts will be all
that is expected of four expert acrobats.
The hours for these free u<fts
will be announced later, and they will
be a big feature of the fair. ,
Saturday, October 20, will be the
negro day at the county fair. The
colored school children from all sections
of the county will" parade
through the business section, ami will
be admitted free of charge to the fair
grounds. One of the features that
day will be a football game between
the negro teams from the Jackson*
high school of Camden and the negro
high school of Charleston. The Charleston
team was victorious last season
by a score of 6 to 0, but as the
Camden team only lost three players
from last year's team they are hoping
to' win this year. The Jackson
school irf coached by Charles Watterman,
formerly of the State College at
Qrnpgeburg. He has three fast players
in Waddy Rudolph, Murray James
and Richard Dow. The admission
will be 10c and 25c. A section of the
grounds will be reserved for white
people who care to see the game.
