of Oregon alder (Alnus Rubra).
It appeared poj^ible that a Are could
bo ur res ted by natural walls or borders
of such non-burnable growing
material. Mr. Woods divided southern
Washington young plantations
into compartments hedged with Oregon
alders. He found that the aiders
did act as "a very efficient deterrent."
Now the Federal Forest Service J
has adopted the method in the west- !
em plantations. Recently G, R. Ink- j
ster, manager of the Perpetual Forests
of Now Zealand, and the forestry
departments of two Australian States
took up the experiment, "I saw,"
reported Mr. Inkster, after a visit to
the Longfbell forests in Washington,
"where a forest had been burned
right up to a belt of these alder -trees
which Aames had been unable to ignite.

Mr. Woods collected 20,000,000 alder
seeds for the New Zealand and
Australia Arebreak plantings. These
will supersede the strips of ploughed
earth formerly used to check Ares,
but which were not so effective as
the alder : border in preventing Ares
from spreading. , *
Plato Edney, white, was electrocuted
at the state prison at?RaleighN.
C., Friday. He had been convicted
on a charge of slaying his wife,
and maintained his innocence, ex- i
plaining that it was an accident, up
until he took his seat in the chair, *
and then confessed that he had lied
all the time and that he did kill his
wife- "I deliberately blew her brains
o?j. with a shotgun," he said.
Mrs. Daisy Allen Story, a former
head of the national Daughters of the
American Revolution, died at New
Rochelle, N. Y., Friday, aged 75
years.

open and in the hands of some club
member at each precinct. It is not
necessary for one to re-enroll this j
year if his or her name was on -the
roll in 1930. Persons becoming of
voting age since 1930 will have to
add their names to the list and persons
moving from one precinct to
another since 1930 will have to have
their names added. The roll books
will remain open until the last Tuesday
in July, which will \fe July 26,
when they will close.
Filing Pledges
Candidates will have until midnight
of Saturday, August 20, in which to
pay their assessments and Ale their
pledges. Assessments are to be paid
to I.'C. Hough, treasurer of executive
committee and pledges will have
to be made to J. H. Clyburn, Clerk
of Court.
