i>" ?HX ' I -?? ? mm*m\ Will Accept Notes For Summer School Greenville, S. C., May 2.? Dean E. M. Highsmith announced yesterday that South Carolina teachers may pay their bills for room, board and tui-< tlon in Furman Summer School this year with their state notes, issued in lieu of cash for services in the public schools of South Carolina. This announcement was made with the full sanction of Mr. A. G. Tay.lor, Business Manager of Furman University, and with the approval of tho Furman Trustees. In commenting on tho announcement, Dean Highsmith stated that "Furman University is happy to cooperate with those South Carolina teachers who desire to attend summer school this year, and who havo been paid in whole or in part with State,Notes. Of.course, we shull accept such notes from teachers without discount, at full faco value. Incidentally," he continued, "all fees for the summer have been reduced in line with the trends to lower cost. As further new feature, these students who register ut Furman for the lirst summer terih, and also take work during the second"* term, will not pay any second term registration fee." President W. J. McGlothlin, in commenting on the situution, declared that "Furman fully recognizes the difficulties that our public school teachers arc facing. I am glad to have the University cooperate with them in meeting their difficulties this year." * The American Farm Federation Bureau, in session at Berkeley, Cal., passed resolutions demanding that the government sell $100,000,000 worth of cotton and grain in markets not heretofore reached. Total Chinese casualties as a result of the fighting about Shanghai has been officially given by China as being <1,000 men and 214 officers killed, and 077 officers and 1,153 men wounded. Marvsh J. Riekcrt, negro merchant of Belmont, near Statesville, N. C., was cleared Sunday by a coroner's jury after he had killed another negro whom he had shot while attempting to rob his store. Richard Gillam is held under bonds totaling $220,000 at Jacksonville, Fla., on charges of swindling the Almours Securities, Inc., out of at least $131,000. ? Early Sweet Poison To Get Boll Weevil .J. ' Clemson College, May 23,?Following the mild winter It is reasonable to expect that u high percentage of boll weevil* will emerge from hiber^ nation and attack young cotton, says Alfred Lutken, extension entomologist, who advises that it is this overwintering brood that every farmer should attempt to destroy. Past experience has shown good results from the use of the 1-1-1 sweetened poison properly mixed and applied during the pro-square stage. The cost of equipment is negligible as only a bucket, a stick, and a few strips of burlap are required. The poison (which is made up of one gallon of water, one pound of calcium arsenate, and one gallon of molasses) if* so easily mixed and applied tha^ there is little excuse for not making ut least this much of an attempt to control tho weevils. The first application of poison Mr. Lutken suggests as soon as- weevils are reported in the community or when tho squares first begin to form, with additional applications at five to seven-day intervals. By tho time four applications have been made the plants are so large that additional applications would be largely wasted. Following the applications of sweetened poison, it is well, he says, to wfttch the squares closely and! make infestation counts frequently, and when one-tenth of the squares show weevil punctures make at least one application of calcium arsenate dust. Thisapplication of four or. live pounds to the acre will help to! chock the weevils until the early bolls are too hardened to be attacked. Two Shot When Bandit Gang Robs , Birmingham, Ala., May 29.?Twen-j ty-flvo persons, two of whom were shot, were lined up against the wall of a rural store near Leeds, Ala., and; robbed today by a bandit gang of j five, who previously had abducted a Birmingham real estate man and stolen his car. Luther Wilder and Mrs. Henry Taylor, customers in the store, were hit by pistol bullets and suffered slight flesh wounds when they were slow in obeying the commands of the bandits to face the wall with their! hands up. More than $900 was tak- < en in the robbery. rnrnmsmstrxsesBsaBm . mv Announcements FORCONGRfeSS To the Democratic voters of the Fifth Congressional District of South Carolina: I desire to thank you for the splendid vote you have heretofore given 1 me at each election ami to announce that I am a candidate for Congress for the 73rd Congress in the Democratic Primary to be held in August and hereby solicit your vote# in said primary and pledge my continued loyalty to your beat inle^ est and faithful devotion to the needs of the District. DePAfiS, JR. o . vv ? . Too Much Cost in This Department? Clomson Uollege, May 23.?The main reason why expenses of the U , S. Department of Agriculture are greater than 10 or 12 years ago is that the public wants what the Department is giving, says D. VV. Watkins, assistant director of the Extension. Service, explaining that $88.80'out of each flOO.OQ of Department; expenditures is spent- in behalf of the general public rather than in behalf of the farming industry. "Of each $100 now spent by the Department of Agriculture $67.40 is for roads through state highway departments and in public forests " Mr. Watkins continues. "'Here then i\the elephant in the woodpile as far a?^lh?5 Department's increase in exDoft&es V concerned. Direct loans tg^ farmers suffering from drought or storm conditions took $15.80 more out of $100, leaving $20.80. "Public service activities, including administration of public forests, weather service, crop and livestock estimates and market information, etc., accounted for $6.70 more, leaving $20.10. The Department's regulatory and control work, such as administration of the puro food laws, the grain futures markets, the plant quarantine, the inspection of meats takes up $8.80 more, leaving $11.70. "Up to this point the expenditures, excepting the direct relief loans to farmers, are primarily in the interest of the public rather than of farmers^ alone. The Department of Agriculture has merely been made the channel through which these expenditures are made and services rendered. "Research and extension work in agriculture, composing the very heart of the Department's activities, take $10.60, which with $1.10 for forestry development in the states accounts for the balance of $11.70 mentioned above. Of this $10.60 a part, $4.20, goes to the states for research and extension work (county agent work) in the agricultural colleges, <the balance, $6.40 being spent directly by the Department of Agriculture. The objective of this research, and extension work is to benefit the nation through the farmer, and to enable the farmer to have as high standards of living as possible." Two unbiased conclusions may be drawn, Mr. Watkins thinks: First, that the farming industry is not the recipient of undue government favors at the hands of the United States Department of Agriculture; second, that it is not "bureaucracy" that is responsible for this department's increase of appropriations so much, as the addition of entirely new responsibilities in the form of road and loan funds which make up three out of four dollars spent.
