The last meeting of the Bethune
chanter U. D. C. for this season was
held on last Wednesday afternoon
with Mrs. K. Z. Truesdale and Miss
Stella Bethune hostesses. Mrs. J. ft.
Williams presided and those contributing
to the program were Mrs. D.
M. Mays, who gave "Our Heritage,
a tribute to our Confederate dead,
poem by Mrs. Margaret Marion,
"Passing of Soldiers in Gray.
Mrs. R. K. Tompkins, of Kershaw
district, directress of the ('. of C.,
was present and plans were made
for the Bethune chapter C. of C.,
with the assistance of the U. D. L.
chapter, to entertain the distiict
meeting of the C. of C. in June. The
date has not .been fixed so far.
A delicious sweet course was
served by the hostesses during the
social hour. ? .
Miss Judith Stanton, of Clio, spent
the past week with Miss Edith Clyburn.

Miss Blanche Gardner, who has
been irv Camden for several years,
has returned to Bethune and la with
her sister, Mrs. Wallace King.
Mr. and Mrs. D. B. Clure, of Florida,
have been guests in the home of
Mr. and Mrs. D. M. Muys.
Mrs. 1,00 McLeod and Mrs. Cooper,
of Durham, N. C., have been visiting
Mr. and Mrs. Henry King.
Mrs. Sid MoCaakill and two daughters,
of Florence, have been spending
several days in the homes of
Mrs. J. M. Clyburn and Mrs. Willie
Hammond.
Miss Mary Louise McLaunn is visiting
friends at Calhoun Falls.

G. E. Parrott attended a district conveptiun,

was at home for the week-end.
Allen Carpe, New York engineer,
and Theodore Koven, 2(1, a member
of his party, lost their lives a
few days', ago while trying to climb
Mount McKinley, in Alaska, while on
an expedition to "trap" the cosmic
ray on Mt. McKinley, America's highest
peak.

Seen By Many
Hundred of person# visited the
Carolina Motor company Tuesday to:
inspect the world's largest tire, giant
replica of the tijea this company aclla,
which weighs over a half ton, and has
travelled from the Atlantic to the
Pacific, from Florida to the Canadian
border, through nearly every state in
the union, v t
The gentleman who pilots this monster
Airwheel tire has dubbed it "Big
Bertha." It's un interesting responsibility,
he explains. Trundled along
behind the specially-built bus, she will
buck and leap if he driven too fast
over rough or wavy roads.
Wherever he goes, he' relates rutfully,
he becomes a DWget for n?tional
sense o^ humt/r. The tlrst
sight of the giant $5,<M)0 tire invariably
brings forth a barrage oV wise
cracks. "Hey misrt-er, yOtrVe got a
flat"; "Boy how would that tire look
on my car!" or "I'll buy four of
them!"
The Airwheel tire is twelve feet
high, four feet wide, and is inflated
to a pressure of threo pounds. If it
is carrying the twenty-five-ton load
for which it is built, it would be inflated
to six pounds pressure.
Much interest also wa^ evidenced

One of the first persons to arrive
at the scene of the wreck was Marvin

recognised the body of his younger
brother and with the aid of friends
removed it to his home.
Details as to the cause of the collision
were not immediately available
tonight. Nor had any arrangements
been made for the funerals of
the two young victims.
Ernest Lengyul, 19, Chicago boy,
committed suicide Sunday while flying
as a passenger in an airplane at
an altitude of 3,000 feet.

Corporation is authorized to purchase
under such terms and conditions as
its board of directors may prescribe
at reasonable rates discount any
certiAcates issued by any state to the
teachers and instructors in the public
schools of such state in payment
of the salaries of such teachers or
instructors if #uch certiAcates are
payable not' later than December 81,
1034, out of the proceeds of special
taxes which are levied or are to be
levied by such state for that purpose."

in the senate that they will
co-operate in securing the passage of
this legislation and I am urging that
the same be given prompt cousidera:
