Desperadoes Die
In Suicide Pact
* V .1 .i
Houston, Texas, Jan. 5.?Harry and
Jennings Young, Oxark mountain desparadoos,
stood too to too today and
kiHod each other rather than submit
to certain capture. Thus ended a
four-state hunt for the two men. who
last Saturday killed eix peace officers
* who had surrounded their "fortress"
near Springfield, Mo.4
The execution of their dramatic
suicide pact fulfilled a prediction by
their aged mother, that "those boys
will never be taken alive. I hope I
hear they have committed suicide."
On a tip that the Young? had hidden
in a cottage, Chief of Pelrce Percy
Heard and LieuU Claude Beverly.
with a large squad, heavily armed,
surrounded it. With the precision of
soldiers they hurled blinding gas
bomb* Into the house.
In a few momenta there was a
shout; - *
"Come anil get us?-we're dead/'
Then the sound of shooting within.
The pVdict* closed in on the cottage,
battered their way inside, and stumbled
over the bodies.
Jennings, lay in a pool of blood,
riddled with shots from Harry's f32
calibre gun. Harry, gasping out ha
life, but still conscious, had received
two wounds in the head and chin
~ from Jennings' .41.
. Two members of the murder
i? gang, believed to he ( harles (l're{ty
?- I toy) Floyd, notorious killer, and Hay
Darker, Oklahoma outlaw, are still
at large,
In the few minutes of life remaining
to Harry Youn^t the police tried
to force him to tell where his companions
were. He died with grimly
t'ight lips, refusing to talk.
The tlacking down of the Young
brothers, more desperate than any
of the old-time bandits?even the
JflineH boys?began when the men fled
from their fortified farm through a
tunnel, escaping a posse that had been
formed of Missouri citizens. An ambuscade
had accounted for the death
of Sheriff Hendrix, of Springfield,
and five of his fellow officer*, who
tried to capture Harry on a murder
warrant charging him with killing a
Republic, Mo., town marshal.
Hack in Springfield two women
were told of the suicides. They were
Mrs. Willie Young, mother of the
two men, who has been in a Jail cell
since Sunday with other members of
the Young family.
"They were all 1 had," she sobbod,
and then, in almost incoherent babble,
she added, "I prayed to Cod they
would never be taken alive."
The second.woman was Mrs. Maud
Hendrix, wife of Sheriff Marcel Hendrix,
one of the victims. She, too,
burst into tears.
"Oh, I'm glad they're dead," she
cried. "I'm glad they're dead, but
it doesn't bring Marcel back to me."
