Mrs. Pitts Hostess to Club
On Wednesday morning of last
week Mrs. R. B. Pitts was hostess
at tier bridge club having an extra
table in honor of Mi** Charlotte
Campbell, of Washington, D. C., who
was the guest of Mrs, H G, Marvin;
Mrs. W. L. Wright, Miss Elizabeth
Farrelly and Miss Clara Krumbholz.
Mrs. Warren Harris and Mrs. Marvin
wore also guests of the club. The
high score ,for. the guests was won
by Mrs^ Wright. After the game the
hostess served a most tempting
luncheon. The club was entertained
this week by Miss Charlotte Shannon.

Miss Campbell Honored
'Mis* Campbell, of Washington, who
was the guest of Mrs. H. G. Marvin
last week was honored with a number
of interesting affairs during her
visit. There were morning and afternoon
.parties in her honor.
For Miss Campbell was the luncheon
that Mrs. A. S. Hunter gave on
Thursday at the Green Leaf Villa.
On Wednesday evening Mrs. H. G.
Marvin entertained with a-lovely dinner.
The pretty affair assembled a
group of the hostess' friends and
those who had attended other parties
in Miss CampbellV honor. ?

Parties New Year's Kve
The New Year was usherecf in and>
the old year out with much gaiety
this year. The Camden Cotillion
club gave a lovely dance at "The
Pines" New Year's Eve. Prior to
the dance Mr. and Mrs. M. L. Smith,
Jr., gave a suppor party at their
home in Kirkwood.
'Mr. and Mrs. Gaylord Tucker and
Mrs. Woods Robinson entertained at
a buffet supper at 7 o'clock.

To Hav? Bridge Benefit
The Camden Hospital Auxiliary
will aponaoi^ a bridge tournament on
January' 16th at th<r residence of Mr.
Frank E. Coursen in Kirkwood. The
hour appointed is 3:15 o'clock. A
charge of 50 cents per person will
be made. Refreshments will be
served after the game.
Miss Zemp Was Hostess
Miss Gertrude Zomp wa? hostess
#t her contract club on Monday evening.
Tho high score prize was won
by Miss Mary Cureton. After cards
sandwiches and coffee were served.
Mrs. John Davidson and Miss Faith

the evening.
Garden Club To Meet
Tho next regular meeting of tho
Garden Club will be held on Monday,
January 11, at four o'clock at The
home of Mrs. T. J. Kirkland, on Lyttletin
street.
Mrs, Rpbert Wilson,.of Charleston,
is to be a guest of the club and will
speak .on the subject of the Federated
Garden clubs,of South Carolina, explaining
tlft advantage^ of joining
the Federation.
It is hoped that a large number of
members will be present.
Once more tho residents of Camden,
whether year around or winter
only, are reminded that they will be
welcome members of the club. Those
wishing to join are invited to the
meeting on Monday, and, jat the close,

The first meeting of the local D. A.
R. Chapter will be held at Deare

Knapp, on Mill street, Thursday,

in Buffalo. It Is his first visit home
in six years and his friends are glad

On Tuesday evening Mr. and Mrs.
w. D. Whitaker entertained at three
tables of bridge at theic. home on
Mill street. Lovely red berries and
green attractively decorated the room
in which the games were played. After
cards the hostess served a delicious
salad course with coffee to

Hotel Camden to the championship
football team of Class B high school^.

Football Team Honored
On Wednesday evening Mr. and
i Mrs. M. L. Smith, Jr., entertained
at their home in Kirkwpo.d lane for
the Camden football team,"state Class
B. champions for this season.
- The table was beautifully decorated
and had as u centerpiece the trophy
cup, bearing the fo& ball used
in the .championship game with
Chester, Christmas day* around which
lovely flowers were banked.

buffet supper dance at the residence
of Mrs. Schlosburg on Tuesday

The John D. Kennedy Chapter, U.
D. C., held the January meeting at
the home of Mrs. J. B. Cureton, with
Mesdames G. H. Baum and J. B. Wallace
as assistant hostesses. The
chapter president, Mrs. S. C. Zemp,
presided and as Mrs. W. F. Nettles,
chapter secretary, was absent, Mrs.
N." C. Arnett served in her ,plnce. The
meeting was opened with prayer in
w-hiclv all the members joiqpd. As
this was the beginning of a New
Year, the treasurer, Mrs. A. A. Reasonover,
collected dues, a Report of
which will be made at the next meet

the members voted to accept as only

will have many interesting and

ing war songs, recitations, readings
and fancy dances and will last from
three until five o'clock. A silver' offering
will be received at the door
and all chapter members are urged to
be present and others are cordially ,

The chapter Historian, Mrs. James
H, Burns, then asked Mrs. John Cantey
to read a ^election from "Camp
Fires of General Robert E, Lee,"
which was enjoyed by all.
A social hour followed,- < during
which tea, sandwiches and cake were
served. The next meeting of the
chapter will be held at the home of
Mrs. George Rhame op February 1st.

The Chronicle, in looking over it^
files of thirty-five years ago, compiling
its column for "Looking Backward",
ran across the following composition
written by a young lady in
the tenth-grade, of the Camden Graded
school. She was fifteen years of
age, at that time. She mentions the
use of the torpedo boat as probably
being useful in case of war, the airplane
and the inyentiop of wireless
telegraphy. They u-boats almost
proved the undoing of Great Britain
and France; the airplanes proved an
affective weapon of war, and wiroless
telegraphy?Jator converted into> * b
radio?now brings daily news and
amusement into millions of American
homes. The young lady who V
wrote this composition Is now the
wife of one of Camden'3 most prom- ^
inent business men. Wonder if "-our o*;
readers can guess who?

ocean for fifteen hOurs. This will be
very useful in time of war.
"MoKinley's death was a very

place as President.
"A trolley car was constructed In
Germany which ran at the rate of
one hundred miles an hour at first
trial.
"The greatest invention of all was
